Just wondering if anyone has ever reinforced their roof for sunbathing? If so ...how? Also, has anyone ever added an extension onto their roof? Andy

A pop-top roof is something we might consider, but it would take away the "classic" element so we're going to see how we get on ducking our heads! Only spent a very small amount of time on the boat as yet. Ask us again after a couple of (longish) trips out.

Hi Bud.

I recently bought a Norman 23,basically a shell at the time of purchase. The roof where the old windscreen was situated, and the grab rails leaked so I decided to fibreglass the area. I continued to glass over the full length of the roof with 450g chopped strand matting and finished off with tissue fibreglass for a neat surface finish. Inside the cabin, was bare, I was going to use tongue and groove cladding on the ceiling,so to give fixing points for the cladding, I applied 2 inch x 1 inch batons across the width of the ceiling, putting 3mm cuts in the face of timber to be bonded to ceiling so the wood followed the curvature of the existing ceiling.
The result was a water tight roof, strengthened and ready to clad on the inside. Plenty strong enough for sunbathing, hope that helped.

Regards.
Waynej.

Thanks Wayne. How much thicker do you think you made the roof overall?

I only used 1 course of 450g chopped strand matting (CSM). With the batons on the interior, the roof/ceiling is robust, there is no flexing of the roof now. Fibreglass can be expensive, but extremely strong http://grpukltd.com so just 1 course bud. here is a address where I purchased mine from, I picked up locally, but they also deliver by courier.
