Does anyone know if I am compromising the integrity of the hull if I wish to cut out 2 mid sections of the GRP lengthways seating on both sides of the cabin? I intend to re- in force the cut outs that will be approx 4 feet? Many Thanks John
The longitudinal berths on small cruisers along with the main bulkhead are designed to stiffen the hull and superstructure. However the deep vee hull of the Normans does mitigate this to a certain extent and if you are canal cruising with relatively low power you'll get away with it. However - for anyone with the knowledge when you come to sell the boat you'll find you have a turkey on your hands.
If you cut away the bulkhead you'll notice the cabin top starting to flex. If you cut out the berth seating of the internal moulding it is of limited effect inland but I would never buy that hull from you as you will have destroyed it forever. All that could be done would be to remove the complete berth moulding and replace the lot in ply and timber as in the earlier models.
So yes - inland little or no effect, off-shore a no-no, re-sale a possible problem.
