Hi all,
chain keeps dropping off the back of the cog on Bonnie the 23. There's lots of play in the wheel and the wheel is very wobbly through it's vertical plane.
Does anyone have a pic of what it should look like on the back - before I start taking the cover off etc... There's definitely a bearing ring or something missing.

Sounds like you need to treat yourself to a new helm gear and cable.

I'd have a look through asap-supplies.co.uk catalogue and see what takes your fancy, most light duty helm gears will be fine on a norman, then just measure what length cable is needed, don't forget mounting brackets as from your description nothing will fit your existing hardware.
in 2012 mine steering went phut and I replaced helmgear, cable, and mounting brackets both ends for about £250, that was one of the dearer non-reaction gear units as mine has always gone off one direction when let go due to the torque reaction of the outdrive vertical shafts, it has a friction clutch so the drive end can't turn the wheel through the cable.
Forget boat breakers or any second hand parts as they have been replaced for a reason, buy new gear and cable together or the old bit will wear the new bit.

thanks DF. I'm sure you're correct in your thinking, I don't think i'd have confidence in going out on the river thinking the steering might fail after a make do fix.
The breakers was for other parts like a running light cover etc... if I stuck with the chain system I'd take my bike apart hahaha

I fixed my winch up with 2 bmx freewheels and a bit of chain! That is the main workings inside it.

I rebuilt the helm/console on my 23, still got the rack and pinion steering system that I replaced with Teleflex gear. The wheel,cable,helm gear, transom mount,etc. are all ok. If it's any use to you let me know.

Thanks Jud. I'm having another look at it. I think it'll be reet if i can sort the nut behind the wheel... hang on, thats me! 
I might be looking at a replacement soon though. Having made the switch on your own boat did you find it was worth the investment?
All the problems are at the wheel/chain I'll keep you updated.

There's more than one nut on the wheel,I've had to drag 3 boats in this afternoon .BTW we're at Ashwood Marina if you want the gear,all I want is enough to keep my lady in cakes for a couple of days.

Well we had the console off the other day and took it all apart and put it all back together again - tight. Seems to have done the job.  It's obvious the previous owner has adjusted the height to suit his own standing position so it's a good six inches higher than the original positioning of the helm.
The other issue was the engine cutting out at low revs. Adjusted idle setting so hope that will tide us over til next full service.
