Hey All,

Looking for any advice. I've got a Honda 100 (10hp) on my Normal 20.

I've recently developed two faults at the same time which are probably related. When putting the outboard in reverse, the control cable does seems to push it far enough, causing it to slip. I have adjusted the engine connector as far as I can, but still no joy. Is there anywhere else I can adjust? I've got a real basic control set, and looked inside it, but couldn't make head nor tails.

Second issue may be related. When it forward and cruising along at say, half speed to just above Rickover.. The engine revs are constantly changing when the turning of the wheel (and more likely the engine). Does do it when in throttle only mode.

Any ideas? It's making it pretty much unusable.

Many thanks

hi, i'd have a good look at the cables, not just the ends that are connected, you could have a break in the cable along its length and thats why when you turn its altering the revs, the cable moves too when turning
i had a similar problem last year on my honda 10hp, it wouldn't go into reverse but would go forward fine but similar you started to lose revs along the way, both ends were connected ok but on closer inspection the steel inner cable had snapped so it would push it into forward gear but then couldn't pull it back into reverse

Get a free manual for a start - here perhaps? http://cdn.powerequipment.honda.com/marine/pdf/manuals/31882621.pdf

I suspect you possible have two separate issues, the increase in revs almost certainly because the cable is getting hung up somewhere - the cables don't fray, they are solid push-pull but a heavily damaged outer will allow steering movements to compress/extend the outer and that will alter the revs.

Unless a miracle, I suspect you need to adjust the gear selector rod inside the leg because it sounds like the clutch is not engaging properly. It may of course be totally knackered dogs on the clutch in which case you'll need to strip the lower unit to change them.

I'd start by adjusting the selector rod that runs down the leg, look for an access plate located with two screws. With it off move in and out of reverse noting which way the rod moves, increase or decrease by adjustment the rod length slightly and by holding the prop make sure the gears engage fully.

If reverse continues to slip or jump out you'll need to drop off the lower unit and strip it. While you're doing that change the water pump impellor and both the seals and also the prop-shaft seals as you reassemble. It isn't hard to do with a vice and basic tools.

The cost of boating is insignificant compared to costs of a young wife and two teenage kids!

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all the advice. Went through it bit by bit and finally tracked it down...

I hadn't noticed that the metal platform that the control cables were mounted to had dropped down and wedged so that the control cables were at an angle. This resulted in the gear cable not being able to push far enough (it was already adjusted to the max) and the throttle cable catching whilst turning.

If the damn thing had just come loose and stayed loose I would have probably noticed it, but because it became wedged against the engine casing, I hadn't noticed.. doh!

So, adjust it back up and touch wood, so far so good!

Thanks all!
