We're about to buy a Norman 32, very exciting! Is there anything we should look out for when we're examining it? We are first time, slightly nervous boat owners!

Hi,Heltony.
Best of luck with the boat, but if you're not sure of it pay for a survey, as the boat of your dreams can quickly become your worst nightmare.
Jud.
p.s. Thanks for the cooker , Jimbo.

I think you're right Jud. We keep hearing different opinions about the Norman 32. We've been told that it's only suitable for canals, and would be no good for the Shannon here in Ireland, and from other people we've been told it would be fine on the Shannon. I know that it has been stated that the 32 is only for inland waterways, but surely that should include rivers and lakes???

My 32 was moored on the Aire & Calder Navigation, which is a commercial shipping route,(big water, tidal in places) and she was ok with 42hp.

So do you think we'll be ok on the Shannon? If we were crossing the lakes it would only be in very gentle weather. We have a merc 1800 engine....not sure of the horsepower (excuse my ignorance!).

Mine was a Merc OM636 (1800)42 hp, rarer than unicorn dung these days.
If it breaks it's gonna be expensive.

Yeah, that's what ours is. We've been told that it's recently been serviced, and we've got an engineer taking a look at the boat and engine tomorrow. It's not too late for us to pull out of the purchase, but of course we've fallen in love with the boat now! Very stressful!

Ahhh well....it wasn't meant to be! The boat we were looking at has a knackered engine, so the search continues.

What was the price of the boat. Would it be worth trying to get it for a lower price and putting another engine in it. It does not have to be the same make of engine.

The boat was cheap anyway, €7000. We thought of that, but really don't want the hassle. We don't mind a bit of cosmetic work, but want the engine to be sound. The Enfield outdrive was on the way out too, and the engineer didn't have a good word to say about them anyway. We'll keep looking, and the right boat for us is out there somewhere.

Enfields are ok as long as they are working, basic enough for home fixing and most of the bits are still made by bob knowles, you don't get the drip in the bilge from a stern gland either.
You can also steer in reverse, try volvo outdrive parts prices before discounting them, outdrives seem to have the marmite factor depending on what the engineer is used to working on.
