I have a VDO tachometer from the 70's in the boat that was originally powered from a petrol engine coil. When the engine was changed by a previous owner to diesel this must have stopped working. I have a alternator fitted with a w connection on it. Should this work if I wire the tacho to the "W"

It depends on the number of poles the alternator has and the pulley ratio, most diesel tachos are adjustable for different setups.
I had to add a phase tap to my alternators to connect tachos as my original tachos used a magnetic pickup on the flywheel with 4 slots machined in to trigger them.
