I have never used an anchor before.I am planning a trip to Lincoln and been advised to carry one. Any instructions on how to use one would be welcome. I assume you don't just chuck it over board and hope!

Thanks

If all rope warp use 5 times the depth+bow height to allow enough scope to hold, assuming you have power at the time tie to bow cleat and lower with nose into flow and get ready to get your hands out of the way if it catches, if no power tie it on and chuck it over and hope.
Grapnel types are crap and won't stop you just slow you down a bit, danforth types are ok and hold well.
Recomended is to have the first 5 metres chain then the rest rope, the weight of the chain holds it flat to stop it tripping and reduces chaffing/abrasion on the rope.
A good google will find some good guides.
