Have a very old and very tired Norman Conquest 20. Purchased it for next to nothing, and needs some work throughout. I was thinking if it would be possible to cut the rear aft cabin off...effectively converting it into an open back.
Anyone had any experience of doing this. Or have an opinion on it? I'm planning on keeping the boat for a long time - so don't worry about any resale value being destroyed. |

I did it to a norman 25, made it a much more usable boat and got good money for it when I sold it too. Plan the canopy well so the bars don't get in the way when folded down, I used sliding mounts so one bar sat on the rear deck and the other would hook over the screen but when up left a nice clear gap to get in through, can't stand the acrobatics to get through some pole setups.

 Plenty of piccies here http://www.orthoticlocum.co.uk/haddock/

That's brilliant. You've made my mind up. Thanks for all the info and great pics. We'll be bringing the boat back to dry storage as soon as we can and start the re-modelling!! Thanks again. |

The main thing to remember about any project like this, is to plan it in the pub, anything you're not sure of and it's back to the pub to work it out. Go through everything you dislike about every boat you've seen and try to find ways around it, just because 'thats how boats are' doesn't mean thats how boats have to be. Beer will get you through it....

I always liked the idea of an aft cabin till I bought one, a 6'x6' hole to step into and an old dog that I'd have to carry on and off, both previous owners said 'aft cabin is great, you can chuck all you're junk in it', sorry but on a narrowbeam cruiser the junk can be chucked in a skip as there isn't room for extra crud onboard. Was told while cutting it that I was ruining the boat, went on to sell it for £6300 a couple of years later, not bad for a 40 year old boat I recon.

Hi mrippon
I have a Conquest with the aft cut off, it makes the cockpit three times the size, there is more room then some bigger boats, and as we spend more time in the cockpit then the cabin it makes sense.
I'll get some pictures up. |
