Hi, I've got a Norman 23 1975, I've recently gone to it and found about 6inches of water in it front to back, I'm going to rewire it, but having got some of the original wiring in it.
I've got a 15hp Honda outboard 1995, it would great if somebody could help me with what wires are for what, at the mo I know the battery isn't charging and the the rest of the wiring is like a birds nest,

Thanks very much
Rich

Hi Rich
can't help with the wiring I'm afraid, sure someone will be along with advice, I would be more worried about the water, you don't say if it's on or off the water or how long it's been left standing. I have a 23 and my windows and forward hatch leaked quite badly, is your canopy sound, any below water line points of entry?

regards

John

Hi,
i'm new in here and to owning a Norman 18 which we are feverishly bringing up to scratch for the BSS cert. I have an electronics background which while i'm not an electrician or marine engineer i work mainly with 12 volt stuff.

You say your wiring is a birds nest, general advice is ideally this would be removed and rewired in a tidy fashion to both increase reliability and also help to prevent fires, but please don't delve in blindly.

Since your craft was made no doubt there will be bits of kit added and removed, wiring modified and so on confusion may easily reign especially if relying solely on the makers schematic diagrams (though good to have if available), if we are talking mains wiring then a very high hazard of fatal shock exists so your very strongly advised to seek an electricians help, or a least someone with a good level of competence, i will not advise on this area.

Low voltage wiring is not to be disrespected, many road going vehicles catch fire during the course of a year so think about what your going to do before you do it. This will be tedious but needs doing, notarise every cable connection so first disconnect any batteries or other power sources.

Next us a bit like unravelling lite string, you will notice different colours used, record them in your notes, use your camera phone to take copious pictures for later reference.

Now decide and concentrate on one cable at a time, disconnect an end and put a marker on the terminal it came from, now carefully pull the cable out of the jumble, if needed crimp/solder on new plugs etc and reconnect, repeat for the next cable and so on, you will be surprised how quick a hopeless tangle disappears this way. Shorten overlong cables, replace those that are to short.

Heat shrink sleeving is a very good method of insulation, avoid tape joints as the glue deteriorates over time and could cause unexpected shorts.

Alan
