I recently bought a norman 22 which had a refurb job done. I noticed a bit of damp in cabin when buying the boat but thought probably condensation as all vents had been closed for quite some time. We took boat home on a really wet night( took canopy off when transporting the 30 miles only to have a really heavy rainstorm hit).
Got main rainwater out of boat as bilge had good bit of rainwater in it. This is when noticed a leak to port side of cabin when ran hand under deck on superstructure feels damp. Then noticed damp in cupboard. Took back panel off cupboard and underside of sink unit was very wet and full of mould. Water seems to be running along the space between double laminate and slowly dripping out at that point there is also the damp bit above v berth when run hand under deck. Dont know where the source is

A, from a deck fitting such as bow cleat

B, from houdini hatch which is a sit on fiberglass cut out type.

C, from where hull meets superstructure to bow somewhere?

Any suggestions? How big is this problem? Been a good few dry days and boat is nearly dry except for damp area at galley. Seller of boat seems to have done a good job of veneering problem although refurb done 3yrs previous and maybe problem developed since? Seems to have been leaking for quite some time. No windows are leaking. However if left this will be a big problem can seal up areas where water is leaking into cabin but doesnt stop initial leak

Hi dampsticks,
Unfortunately in my on-going experience of refurbishing a 23 there are no easy solutions however things to look at are:

Any deck fitting, cleat, windscreen etc. that is bolted or screwed through the fibreglass anywhere, as if they leak the water will find its way between the double skin ceiling and come out at the lowest point as you describe under the narrow deck walkway.

Check the sealant that has been used to secure the fittings. If it is ordinary silicon replace it with a good marine product like sikoflex-291.

Might be difficult on newly repainted deck but check for old redundant holes that have been filled with resin repair they may need doing again, my hull has hundreds of these holes where previous owners have been creative.

You say the windows don't leak but in my case the frames in the fibreglass leaked and the water ran down the double skin again.
Have a go with a pressure washer and see what areas cause what leak, you can be fairly precise but be careful as it will lift any loose paint.

Hope this helps, others on this site will have other ideas maybe and if so I'm listening too as I have a persistent leak requiring a permanent bucket-the front cabin window frame has been out so often that the fibre glass around it has broken and cracked so really needs a new lay up.

You would be amazed at how and where water can get into a boat. It is very rarely where you find the wet. I had this problem with a Norman 22 Mk4. It turned out to be the drainage slits in the sliding windows, clogged up with moss etc. The water was showing everywhere but the window area. I cleaned the slits out and never had a problem after that. Worth a try, good luck./ Something else you could try, Draw a chalk mark around the inside of the boat and the water ingress will show you the area where its running in.
