I have got to design a wind screen for my 32. Can any one tell me what height I can go up from the cabin roof to enable me to get under the low bridges and tunnels.
It's not clear what the width those figures are for though - are they based on a 7ft width at the cabin roof? Since most of the height restrictions are going to be arch shaped, potentially the narrower the boat is, the bigger the air draught available.
Most boats are going to be narrower than the max width at cabin roof height, but that will be variable. Those figures could be just for a typical narrowboat, not sure how that would compare to yours (probably not much different).
Looks like a 5' 9" air draught will let you get just about anywhere, although you probably want to go an inch or two on the safe side!
Thanks for that but that list does not include some of the canals IE the Brecon which is the nearest to me which has a low tunnel and the Stratford which has a low bridge leaving the Bancroft Bason plus the tunnels because I want to do the Avon Ring. If i Knew the original height of the screen I could work to that.
Make it fold down easily, you can have some decent headroom in the cockpit then and still get anywhere, my old 25 screen had 2 seperate sections that folded forward (leaving a V gap between) and end panels that then folded down against the main screen sections, while running single handed I could drop the canopy and screen in about a minute without having to stop, just as quick to put it back up again too. Was great in summer dropping the screen for normal running as well. As we had 2 canopy poles I put the front ones on sliders so it could be pulled forward over the screen and rest under it even when folded down.
Not the best image but you can see the hinges. This one gives an idea of the height.
