My Norman 20 has solid black plastic (pvc?) rubbing strake, with a 'B' cross section. I'm guessing it's probably the original stuff, and it's looking very much past it's best and breaking up.
There looks to be a wide variety of different shapes available these days, many of them will hollow section rather than solid. Are these suitable for my boat, will they provide a bit of cushioning on impact(while docking I mean, not a head on collision!), rather than transmitting all the force straight into the hull? Or is it just because the existing stuff has hardened so much, and new B section would be softer?

I pulled off some of the old strake and all the screws are too rusty to remove, the ones that even have a head on just snapped as I tried to undo them. Not sure how best to tackle it, probably just grind them off to just below the surface and fill over the top of them?

I think those would look good in white with blue inserts.
As far as the screws go, I would do as you suggested, grind off and fill. |

| Even though my strake is intact over a season sections after a small bump does come adrift and as you say the fixings all corrode so I just carefully saw them flush then refit with self tapping stainless screws after drilling a tiny pilot hole. They are behind the inner infill part which I have change to dark blue rope think 14mm which is a very tight fit and a dab of grab adhesive behind it. |
