I have a car stereo fitted to my boat but when i fitted it didn't bother with an aerial as only really wanted it for cd's. My lad has been pestering me to get the radio part working for footy scores etc. Whats the best way to ground an aerial even if it's only make shift ?.
Would a clamp on the stainless cabin roof grab rails work or a magnetic mount to the sink. Not pretty but would only plonk it on the sink, which is close to the fitted stereo when needed.
Radio antenna for the car radio does not require grounding. mine worked fine with it just through fibreglass. Power output from radio broadcast masts is more than enouth for you to recieve without groundplane. grounding an antenna is more for broadcasting than recieving.
Cheers Steve, so what do i need just a cheapo car aerial and leave it in the locker cupboard behind the stereo or just some wire like you have on home stereo units connected to the aerial connector behind stereo ?
Pleasure mate. which ever you feel ok with, one of the flexi wire ones would be best if you only intend to connect it when required. would also mean you don't have to mount it to the boat. bit of blue tac to attach it to the top of screen. their really cheap on Ebay.
Saw what I thought was your boat yesterday at Craycombe above Fladbury - Tipsy Buoy? She was looking good. Gave your boat a wave and a few peeps of the horn. I was in the Shetland Black Prince
