Hi

After comming in to my mooring the steering went on my Norman 20, and on inspection the outer cable seems to have separated from the steering box.Does anyone know if this is held in place by some type of retaining clip? Also the make of steering fitted to the Norman 20,and where replacement parts can be obtained. your help and advice would be appreciated

Regards

The outer cable is normally held by a bolt to secure it on the feral end. The cable should have a number and length stamped on it. Any chandlery should be able to supply one or try ASAP supplies.

I started life with nothing and I still have some left

I need to take the cover off the steering box on my next visit. I only had time for a quick look, but the ferrule has a deep groove in the end that looks like it might have been held in place on the inside of the steering box by a 'C' clip, but at the moment I am only guessing.

I can't seem to drop photo's on this site so i have sent you an email with photos showing my helm steering box.
I have a N20 and have had my own in bits. Trust me, they are not to be feared.
They are a very simple 2-part casting with a crown wheel inside. They are held together with screws with the exception of the
Cable ferrule positioning seats. These are held together by 2 bolts.

Don’t be afraid to split these to investigate, they are very simple to understand and put back together.

If you find that the ferrule has come away from the Cable, simply take the outer cable plus ferrule to a Hydraulic Pipe supplier. These guys have the equipment and they will "swage" it back on ie, reconnect it
If you need any further help mail me back and I will give you my mobile number

Good luck

Findings on further examination over time the thread has worn on the bolt holding the face-plate to the steering box caseing at the ferrule entry point. This has allowed movement and consequently wear of the ferrule end where it is held captive in the steering box houseing which has resulted in the cable breaking loose from the steering box.
As the wear is both on the cable and in the steering box it looks like I will have to replace both.
