Hi All

Just a question for the technical/electrical experts.

Anybody ever put a table top fridge in a boat?

Curry's tabletop fridge = 114Kw/hrs per year, I make that about 300 watts per day @ 12 volts = 25amps per day.

I know you get some extra power usage with the inverter and it could be that my sums are totally wrong but just wondering what peoples thoughts are?

Many Thanks
Mike

Would a 12v caravan fridge not be better, add a decent solar panel. fridge would only be using pure battery power during darkness. your invertor will use a good deal of battery power just to run fridge.

Go for a compressor fridge(danfoss compressors seem to be the best), don't bother with any other type on 12v as they are bettery killers, you can get a kit from isotherm that you can build into an insulated cupboard and mount the comperssor remotely (in the cockpit), they are very quiet and don't use much power.

Waeco 12v compressor fridges are probably
the most efficient for low power consumption

Waeco and isotherm both use the danfoss compressor I think.
I had a waeco drawer fridge on my old norman 25 mounted under a seat in the cabin with the compressor in the bottom of a cupboard beside it.

And No food ever went bad in it (Although no food was ever placed in it!)

Please note : Other beers are available, no affiliation with said products are implied.

To be fair that must have been taken around breakfast - theres still 2 cans left !!!

The most efficient fridge is a caravan fridge run on gas If you run them on 12 volt they will kill a battery in a very short space of time.
I have bought a lec under worktop fridge freezer for my 32 and will be using a 2000 watt inverter and a large bank of battery's.

why would you go from 12v to 230v through an inverter then back to 12v and as we know a gas fridge on a boat is now frowned apon

I[ve used an ex caravan fridge hooked the 12 up through a fuse and relay so that it only ever powers the fridge when the engine is running and then I'm told so long as we don't open the door too often over night then it should work fine. It is also 240 volt when in a marina. Still to tried though

Compressor fridge is the way forward, once down to tempersture it switches off to conserve power, they are expensive though, if you look around, Ebay, Preloved etc, you can pick up a bargain, I picked one up at one of the boat jumbles (Preston tommorrow) for only 20 quid.

I'm working on a peltier cooled mini fridge. It draws 4A continuous, but I estimate I can get that down by at least 50% with a bit of modification...

Even at 2 amp continuous turn it off when the engine is turned off or you will have flat batteries very soon.
