I am considering buying a 4 stroke Honda 9.9hp outboard for my Norman 20 however it only comes with battery cables. Can anyone advise on suitable Keyswitch/Throttle Lever for my boat. The distance from the original lever mounting point to the outboard position is approx 8ft (allowing for a bit of flex). Also, can anyone advise on all the wiring requirements when i have everything together ready for connection. I already have the steering rod in position. |

Do you not have any control (Morse) gear already on the boat ? If so its easy to convert for use on a O/B.
We had to change the gear from pull to push (Or visa versa!) when we went from Inboard to Outboard.
If you dont have any look for a single lever setup rather than a twin

We also dont go for the key option , just a push button / start stop . A key wont stop anyone stealing but will inconvenience u when you lose them overboard !
Sewer Tubes ? I'd rather have a D**ncr*ft (Only Kidding) |

At the moment i dont have anything other than the steering cable/rod in position. When i got the boat 14 months ago there wasn't an outboard with it, so now that i need to buy one, i need all the extra's that normally come with the outboard. I don't mind a push button start either. At the moment i just need to understand what i need to buy in addition to the outboard itself. Thanks ! |

Hi Wayfoot - I am also considering a new outboard foor my 20, possibly a 9.9 or a 15 hp 4 stroke to replace the 50 hp 2 stroke.
I already have the cables / control / battery / key start, but wondered where you were looking to purchase, as most ebay outboards are more than likely going to be a bit dodgy! |

Ok, thanks for the replies. So am i best looking for a single lever/cable control arrangement ? Also stated, the outboard sounds like it should be fitted with a battery charging facility, is this a 'alternator type device' that charges the battery. How do i identify whether the outboard is fitted with such a device, is it visiual & what is the correct term for the device. Thanks ! |

Sadly no - I'll most likely need them when I change my outboard, and if I find a new outboard with all of the control gear included (seems to be a fairly regular occurence with new outboards set up for remote use) then chances are the control cables will go when I get round to selling my 50 hp outboard.
As yet, I haven't had a really good look into it, thinking I've got the winter to work on it, so no idea when I'll get round to sorting it all out! |

I believe larger outboards have an alternator and smaller ones have some kind of charging coil circuit. Don't expect a charge like a car alternator, think my Mariner 9.9 gives out 6 amps/hr, enough to trickle charge the battery.
If you are buying new i believe most come as a package as long as youbuy a remote model and not a tiller model, mine came complete apart from the two Teleflex cables which the marina threw in to the deal. |
