Can anyone help? We have just aquired a Norman 20. Lovely! We don't like the stretchy curtain wires threaded top and bottom through the cabin curtains. The little eyes are simply self tapped through the inner skin of the cabin. I wondered about fitting, say, half inch rods with miniture 'towel rail type' end fittings. But I cannot find these end fittings small enough. I also thought that the curtain could simply hang and tuck behind the bottom rail rather than be threaded. I thought varnished half inch wooden dowl with brass coloured end fittings would look quite good. But I would love to hear of any better ideas! Is it ok to screw the fittings into the inner skin?? Many thanks. |

I came across the YKK SNAD in my efforts to come up with a curtain solution. Obviously doesn't solve the curtain rail problem, but it's a different idea.
See the cheesy video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQsXDMQ9DQY
A clever self adhesive popper stud, I found one supplier in the UK, but the downside is they are about a fiver each and aren't to everyones taste, but itis a different option.
Not sure about your boat, but I tried to avoid scewing into the fibreglass as, while it is thick, I only have a single skin.
Cheers,

Ahhh this is a topic i spent hours on. My Norman 20 came without any curtains or tracks. I was lucky, i have a wonderful mother who just loves making curtains so she advised a suitable style of track and made me the lot. The biggest problem i found was not the tracks, but the most suitable hanging bracket to mount the track on. This isn't something you can just rush into so i would try and visit local curtains specialists and ask for samples of track and hangers to trial. I am currently fitting mine and will attach a photo when finished. Good luck, but be patient with your search. |

| Thanks for replies. love the video! Quite right Wayfoot. No rush with this boating lark. I'll post as soon as I hit on a solution. Any more ideas out there? Those stretchy wires can't be original Norman, can they? Perhaps Norman Boats - ex factory - didn't have curtains fitted?? |

When I did my old boat we used Silent Gliss track. It is available to fit to a vertical surface and a horizontal surface. It is an aluminium track that can be curved slightly with plastic sliders that take curtain hooks.
It made shutting the curtains really easy. It is available from Force 4 and Toomer and Hater and also Norfolk Marine.

I finished installing curtain rods yesterday on the Conquest. Consisting of 8mm dia. aluminium rods (free from an office cupboard manufactures scrap bin! absolutely perfect for the job) mounted horizontal above and below each window. Fitted to small L shaped teak blocks made from an old window frame retained when I had the house windows replaced (free or £3000 for the new windows depending on your point of view!). Attached to the cabin sides with stainless steel self tappers from Aldi (£3.95 for a big variety box) Solid, simple and looks very nautical. For the curtains currently in production by the drappery/ upholtery department (aka mum). I'm avoiding curtain rings and having 1/2" wide tabs top and bottom about 5 inches apart which will slide along the rods, the tabs having velcro on them for adjustment, easy removal and fitting will go over the rods and secure to mating patches of velcro on the main curtain. I've tried a couple of prototypes and it works well. Picture of the rods fitted can be supplied if you send me an e-mail. |
