Evening everyone, have just over a week off in a few weeks time, anyone know how long (locks permitting) it would take to go from Sunbury (where I'm moored) on the Thames right up to the last lock which I believe is Lechlade, would like to know how far I can go as would have to be roughly 5 days up and 5 days back.
Cheers
Mike

Mike

Not sure how err 'Manic' you are when it comes to cruising !!!

However We could certainly do it in our 22.

Our trip down the Thames a couple of yrs ago on Dads Sewer Tube had the following log for the first few days

Day 1 - Wolverton Lock Oxford Canal to Beale Park River Thames 32 miles 11 locks.

Day 2 - Beale Park to Hurley 24 miles 8 locks

Day 3 - Hurley to Above Shepperton (Including trip down the old river looking for moorings!) 30 miles 13 locks

Day 4 - Shepperton to Teddington 10 Miles 2 locks

IIRC we arrived Teddington around 2pm , We probably cruised 10-12 hrs most days at lower speeds than a cruiser. Of course its faster going back for you !! , Can only remember self operating 1 or 2 locks. Of course you also wont have to cruise the err 5 odd miles?? from Sunbury to Teddington so Day 4 of our cruise is really wiped off.

Go for It !!!

Adi

Sewer Tubes ? I'd rather have a D**ncr*ft (Only Kidding)

We did reading to lechlade and back in 5 long days. Total cursing time was 38 hours so you can work out what you are comfortable doing. It was vey quiet and managed reading to Oxford without sharing a lock.

Look out for osney bridge in Oxford It's very low.

Some pics http://www.normanboats.co.uk/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=6732

Also make sure you have ample fuel after oxford as there is nowhere really to get after that.

Going the other way we have done reading to maidenhead in a day but that was one way.

Thanks for giving me a rough idea, I know it all depends on so many things, I have a 10hp on my 23, did manage to do all of the River Wey from start at Sunbury to Shepperton then via Thames Lock all the way to the end at Godalming and back to Sunbury, and all locks apart from the first are the old do it yourself ones, hard work, need a holiday now!! that was from Saturday morning to Monday dinner time.
Due to steering, miscalculated a low bridge and caught the top part of the screen (crunch) but luckily no damage apart from it pulled the side screws out, most of the bridges are low on the Wey, can’t go through them with the hood up, luckily it wasn't raining!
Will give it a go and see how far I get
Cheers

Dave - just read your post. Did you have a bad journey if CURSING time was 38 hours?

Send me an e-mail for my phone number should you be concerned about fuel ater Oxford, I could run some out to you if needed. Also if you get beyond St Johns lock and into Lechlade the Riverside Inn is good for a pint, might even be able to come down from Inglesham on the Conquest to meet you by then. It is navigable past the Roundhouse, just a very well kept secret!
