A simple way to make that safe would be to wear a high-vis jacket - you should be fine then. Ear defenders may prove useful as well.

Those jerry cans are a real faff. They are expensive, heavy and the caps can be a bit fiddly. I'd suggest dumping them and just using a couple of black plastic dustbins to transport the fuel. Much easier to deal with, they don't rust and they are very cheap. Simples!
