I've done lots of reading on this forum, and the rotting transom seems to be the main achillies heel of the Norman boats. I've read about people repairing them on open rear boats by replacing the wood (either with fresh wood or resins).

But on a 'conquest' (which I believe is the same hull as a 20, but with a rear cabin added), there doesn't appear to be an easy way to get access to the top of the transom as the rear cabin moulding caps over the top of it. Does this make the job horrendously more difficult on a conquest, or is there an alternative technique?

If a few test drillings show it to be rotten you could cut the inner skin off , replace the wood and re-glass a new inner skin over the top, probably sealing the wood in better than the original job, thats how I'd go about it anyway, may need doing in sections but if done with overlaps and glued good strength could still be obtained.

Can I take it from this post Mike, that you've been looking at a Conquest ?

Transom probs aside , the main 'Achillies' of a Conquest is the lack of cockpit space & the 'Only usable for sprogs or bogs' rear cabin

I am 6'6" tho !!!

I'm weighing up between a 20 and a conquest. And yes, we have two young children (3 years, and six months), which was drawing me towards a conquest.

Scratch the conquest - I just bought a Norman 20! My first boat.

Looks like one of the previous owners was on here a while ago as well (bodybag).

Nice looking boat Mike. Welcome to the mad world of Norman Cruisers !!

Where are you planning to use it ?? You may be looking at a change of motor.

The fun starts now - B.O.A.T. = Bring out another thousand !!!

Window seals etc all covered in previous posts.

Keep the questions coming !

Mainly using it on the south coast of Cornwall, so the outboard should be about right. Hopefully it won't be too thirsty though...

Hmmmm

It will perform well I guess , but make sure you have a few jerry cans ! A 60HP stroker will drink fuel at revs faster than Georgie Best down the Pub !!

Welcome on board Mike, is it def a 20 as didn't think the 20 had the screen like that, thought that was more the look of the 18.5

Also if you look in the bow under the carpets you might find scribbled the build year as i would think it is earlier than 1982 with the wooden grab rails.

Pretty sure it's a 20, as it has a big vinyl sticker on the side that reads "Norman 20"! The screen may well have been retrofitted - there are some unsightly bolts on the inside above the porthole windows.
