Hello.
My Conquest and its outboard have developed a steering problem.
It seems to call for a replacement teleflex cable but before I order one I wondered what other possibilities I should look for and rule out.
Effectively the problem is the outboard will on steer one way (guiding the boat to port) but when you try to steer the other way it's as if the steering wheel is simply turning itself and not 'engaging'.
Replacing the cable seems the simplest and most logical solution but wondered if anyone could advise on other things to check?
Many thanks!

Sounds like it may have come loose at the outboard end but is close enough to push the motor across but not pull it back.

Check the Teleflex clamp (Ball joint affair) that holds the cable (Near the o/b - usually attached to the floor or stern)

Ours came loose & developed the same fault

Sewer Tubes ? I'd rather have a D**ncr*ft (Only Kidding)

Thanks for the replies. I'm down on the boat now and it doesn't look like anything has come loose at the outboard end.
I'm now wondering if it's something in the helm behind the steering wheel. It seems odd to me that I can steer in one direction but not the other - I'm happy to get a new cable but will this solve that?

Vee - Not actually attached to the o/b - Its a clamp that holds the cable just below the steel telescopic rod. if this has come loose then it will not hold the cable in the 'pull' scenario (Ours does to a degree as it pushes against the hull side if it comes adrift (Leading to lots of wheel turning to make the turn)

This is one type that may give you the idea (Cant find many pics online !)

To be fair ours allows far more movement / adjustment.

If your cable is clamped correctly to the stern then the fault will be at the helm.

Just reread the original post - keep turning the wheel to starboard (Whilst moored) it may make the turn after many more turns than normal - if so its the clamp!

Adi,

Really appreciate the help. I've inspected the clamp and everything appears secure. Turning the steering wheel to starboard more than usual doesn't solve it either - it's as if the steering wheel is almost in free wheel (with very little resitence) when turning that way.
Sadly I'm struggling to undo the bolts and screws to have a look at the internals of the helm but I'll continue scratch my head and clang about!

I don't know much about this but a thought occurred, Could your cable have snapped in the sleeve, so that the ends push against each other but are too tight in the sleeve to over ride each other, then pull apart when you go the other way?

Clive, it transpires you were correct. The cable had sheered about a foot and a half from the outboard end!

Hi Clive there's no such thing as a cheap/quick fix when it comes to boats
