Hello everyone,
Just wanted to say a quick hello as I have just become the proud owner of a Norman 27 called "Alicia" - name shortly to be changed to "White Star"

" target="_blank">

She is currently sitting at march in cambs, but when wayne at Lower park marina Barnoldswick, Lancs has finished his blacking sessions and has room, she will be coming up here for some much needed tlc.

I was just reading the Norman history page and am amazed to find that the factory where these things were made is only a couple of miles away from where I live - and I never knew it.....

" target="_blank">

I have noticed that she has the wrap around front windows that I havent seen on any other Normans, if anyone has any information on this type or even this very boat I would love to hear it.....

looks like a lot of hard graft on the horizon, but i can see the potential for a really nice boat under the clutter...

Cheers Dean - thats what I thought too. It was one of the things that drew my eye to her - that and that I felt she looked so sad and forlorn sitting there all unloved!!!!! Yes Im a romantic fool I know lol.
Also the £1200 price tag was something else that drew m eye......!!!!

Nige

You have a Mk1 Norman 22 (Not 27 as yr post) - Its only the early ones that have the wrap-round windows.

It looks like you may also have a possible Honda 4 Stroke (9.9 or 15) well judging by the partial leg on the back & the cowling hidden inside ! If you have all the bits & the knowhow to make it work again it will be perfect to push yr 22 along.

Welcome to the Madhouse

Adi

Oh & dont chuck that old Calor Cooker - They are almost infinitely serviceable !!

Sewer Tubes ? I'd rather have a D**ncr*ft (Only Kidding)

Cheers for that Adi.

I am down at March as I write this (just checked into the B&B after an afternoon of cleaning, graft and general pottering about on Alicia.)
I also got the tape measure out just to confirm your post above and she is definately a 27 footer.
She has also had an inboard engine at some stage (long removed) when I lifted the deck panels I was confronted with 18" of oily water and a capped off prop shaft.
I spent the last few hours generally cleaning up and throwing crap away!!
As you pointed out there is a 15hp Honda on board, in bits-at first glance it seems to be all there. Not something I can rebuild, that level of mechanical skill is WAY beyond me, but if anyone knows of anyone who can rebuild outboards at a reasonable cost, please pass me their details, as I would like to get it back into the land of the living.

I am very pleased with my first proper look on board. There is a lot to do, but she is basically sound and most of the work is of a cosmetic nature.

My intention is to get her antifouled and paint the hull sides as a first step, she can then go straight onto my mooring. Other work can then go ahead while she is afloat and I can still take her out and enjoy her, even though she wont be finished.

If she is a Mark 1 Norman, in this now confirmed length of 27ft can anyone date her?

Cheers everyone, I will take some more pics tomorrow and post them when I get back to Lancashire tomorrow night.
Cheers,
Nige

An interesting boat mix you have there, I've also never heard of an early norman 27, only the later aft cabin one with the squarer windows, also not heard of a norman on fixed shaft either, inboards are usually used with enfield outdrives on the normans.
The length of the cockpit makes me think it's had an aft cabin removed (what sort of animal would do that??? oh yes I remember ), did you include the pulpit in your measurements as it would fit for a modified 25'

Curiouser and curiouser!!!!!
I measured from the point of the bow to the stern at gunnel hight, I didnt include the pulpit rail.

I didnt notice any obvious signs today of the removal of the aft cabin, but I certainly cant rule it out, will have a closer look tomorrow and see if there is anything that might confirm this.

This is getting really intrigueing...!!

Are there any Norman company records surviving that might help identify her?
Cheers everyone.

The canopy looks very large for a 22 so looks like it must be a 25 with the cabin removed
Have a look at the norman range on this site

There are some right animals around when it comes to boat refits!

The most obvious give away would be the grp coaming edge if it's been hacked.
There are some norman brochures on the main site that cover all the norman mouldings I've ever seen.

Hi Dave,
Im back at the boat today for another tinkering session before I have to leave March and head back up to Lancashire.

I have just had a good look at the rear cockpit after our conversation last night and im pretty certain that she had a rear cabin that has been hacked:-

There is that "step" in the rim - directly above the screwdriver handle in the above pic and from there aft the edge is quite ragged.

Here it is a bit closer:-

Doing a rough gauge of the size (or lack of) that you would have had in that rear cabin I can now totally understand why a lot of them have been hacked!! I think it also massively improves the boats appearance.

Just took these of the area where the inboard engine used to sit.....

ABOVE - You can see the coupling and capped off prop shaft directly in the middle of the pic, above the deck beam.

BELOW - looking aft from the cabin door.

Next on the agenda is to get the bilge pumped out....

If it's been converted from inboard to outboard have a good look at how the outboard well has been done as it could be a right lash up, needs to keep splashed water and rain out and drain to outside without soaking the filler wood, needs good strong bearer across the back to take motor weight and spread the load too.
My old 25 had outboard well made from chipboard with loose base when I got it so had to re-make in marine ply and glass in properly and brace down to hull.
If you are looking for ideas theres lots of piccies of mine at http://www.leomagill.co.uk/haddock/

Just had a bit of slightly bad news, in that I had originally been promised an early June slot for space at Barnoldswick, but that now looks like it's going to be July instead

That will really impact on the time I have avaliable to get her on the water and enjoy any sort of cruising this season.

Suppose it just means that my volunteers at the museum will be seeing a bit less of me throughout July!!!!!!!
