Good Evening All,
Now, as some of you have read, I have recently purcheased what I was told is a Norman 22, it certainly looks Norman-like to me (it has the frog-eyes as forward windows).
So, I made an enquiry to a company to get a quote for new canopy with windows and poles and I have recieved this reply ;
" I would need to see a photo of the boat as there are several models around this size not to mention the calum craft 22 which was the first model before it became the norman 22 and then later the norman 23 (old and new types) we do have patterns for all the models so i,m sure we can help "
I am currently working away at sea and not home to take any photos or measurements until the start of May.
My questions is ; What do I need to look for, what exact measurements need to be taken to establish just exactly what model I have ?
The past BSS certs that I was given with the boat all state it is a Norman 22 built in 1970, is there any hidden makers plates on a Norman hull ?

| Sadly Dan, its not that straightforward! Is anything with Normans? It depends on your pole arrangement and the positions of these as well. Also the lift pin positions around the wheelhouse and on the screen. There is no standard Norman as such. Most canopy suppliers would need at least one visit to your boat I would think. |

Thanks for your reply Trevork, I think you may have mis-read my post, I was enquiring to see how I can be 100% sure my boat is a Norman 22 other than a possible Calum Craft 22. Is there, or should there be a 'makers plate' hidden somewhere that is glass fibred into the hull ?

Understand that Dan but what I was suggesting is that to ask a maker to supply a canopy by simply giving the model would be risky!
To answer your identification question, the Callumcraft and Norman 22's do not even remotely look the same! Have a look at the frontpage of the main website. Does your boat look like that? If not, its a Norman. |

Out of interest, did the Callum Craft 22 ever have the 'frog-eye' type forward windows like mine has ?

No, the Callumcraft 22 only ever appeared in that configuration.

Dan By 'Frog Eye' you may mean Norman 22 Mk1
Is yrs like this ? Ignore the Screen , Silver Lady had a new custom Screen fitted at sometime IIRC (We met the last owners)
The Mk1 was the only one with 'wrap round' windows

Adi, you are a star ! Yes thats the one, I seem to recall on another Norman website that they were classed as 'Frog-Eyed' windows. So then, I have a Norman 22 Mk 1

Dan , Without searching for a better pic , The Mk1 had a 'Speedboat' type screen (Same as our 22 Mk2 - 1968)
I have a old canopy with poles if you wanted to try a fit without purchasing a new one , The 22's with this screen seem to be similar (We bought a new canopy off a guy with a 23 who bought the wrong one!)
Not trying to sell you my old canopy - But if your close you are welcome to try it for a fit ! (Our old one was a Wilson , the new one is a coverit & I didnt have to change anything !)

What a very kind gesture Adi, thank you very much, the more I look at the 'speedboat' design screen, the more I seem to recall mine being of the same shape but fabricated from metal. If my ever failing memory serves me correct, the guy I bought the boat off said that his son was a metal fabricator and he fabricated the new screen to the same dimensions as the original, so I could be in luck ?!?!?!
I am not sure where you live but I live up in the North of Scotland (stop laughing!!!) just outside of a town called Invergordon, about 50 miles north of Loch Ness (where I am planning on using my boat in the summer).
What condition is your canopy in ? Does it have side windows & rear window ? If you think it will fit then I will take it off your hands if its in vgc !

My old canopy is a little err crusty . We fitted new side windows the other year. To be fair , It may be serviceable for a yr or two with care.
You're a little far to take a look ! (Although Mum lives in Nairn !!)
Surely your Tonneau sheet will be fine for Scotland - It rarely rains there ............

I am waiting for another reply from Gary at Coverit, with a price for a new canopy / poles etc, however, I guess it would cost a bit for you to send it up to me would it ? It would certainly do to help me do the restoration inside during the summer (yes we have wet summers up there!) and also if it does fit then it would be a perfect template for a brand new one  Email me with a price that you would consider selling it for and also an estimate for postage / parcel force.
After all, it would be of more use than the one I currently have
