Hey folks, sorry I only seem to post when I have problems and well after a few months of non boating i'm back with a new question.
So I finally got my outboard back (old tomos longshaft) and well all was good, until I got through Middlewich big lock heading towards preston brook, and then every now and again the boat seems to jump forward with a slight jolt the engine tone doesn't seem to change and the fuel seems ok.
This happened a few times when I had a loan outboard which was a short shaft and it was suggested this was the issue, so any idea what could cause it ? Its also been suggested I check my spark plug, could this be it?

might be worth checking the fuel side of things
make sure there is not a vacum building up ie the air screw
on the the fuel tank or contaminated float chamber on the
carb

You say no change in engine tone ? So no splutter / misfire etc ?
If not then fuel / ignition system sounds ok ie motor is running ok.
So to jolt - Could be the motor kicking - Is it secured properly & locked down on the tilt pin correctly ?
Or more worryingly , Gearbox issues (Did you not have probs with the gearbox on yr way home - Missing teeth that align now & again causing a jump / jolt
Hard to tell without actually experiencing what you are seeing.

Sounds like the motor is jumping in and out of gear - possible badly adjusted on the gear shift push-rod down inside the leg - look for a plate or rubber bung to expose the male/female sleeve connector for that) or the dog clutch is worn and needs replacing.
Ha - I just realised it's a Tomos - not sure if you can actually buy replacement clutch dogs or if you'll have to re-face them.
The cost of boating is insignificant compared to costs of a young wife and two teenage kids! |

I did have gearbox issues with it, the dog clutch went andd has been reground so maybe that is the cause,
but no no splutter or misfire, it stalls if left idling for a while 5 mins or so but other than that seems fine.
I'll check your suggestions this weekend, cheers once again for your time and advice.

If re-ground too far the dogs may have gone through the hardened layer which will make it wear out pretty rapidly, I'd advise to start looking for a replacement while it still works.

Oh I'm already looking at shiny new engines, and I've got a few leads on some remaining tomos spares although the shinier newer idea is slowly winning.

Dave could well be right, solution is re-grind and face and THEN get someone to case harden them for you.
Then SELL it!

| Well it's time to do something, took it out at he weekend had a good run out to the pub, came to restart the engine and it's skipping sounds like the dogs worn quickly, luckily gt a tow home, anyhow plan is too look for something newer any ideas on what sort of size make I should go r ? It's a Norman 20 mainly canal dd bit or river but nothing really teal her me, I've seen a 10hp Yamaha for 1400 s/h locally. |

I've got a 9.9 Mariner and on the river it's fine. Cruises happily at 5-6 mph and flat out reached about 10-11 mph. Upsets the fishermen though  |

£1400 for a s/h 10HP may be a bit rich (Unless its nearly new)
A yam 9.9 high thrust really moves a 20 , a BF15 will also perform as well
shop around even tho you want to get out soon!
