Hello!
I am currently restoring a Norman 22' which from this site and it's window configuration I now know is a Norman 22 Mk III.
Could anyone give me an idea of what years the MkIIIs were produced, as I have no idea of the age of my Norman.
Also, I have no idea of it's name... there is no marks or record of a name and no real history. I know the superstition around renaming boats, but how does it stand when it comes to an orphan, recuse boat with (apparently) no name?
Superstitious mumbo jumbo maybe but just in case!

Appease the gods by drinking lots of beer when re-naming a boat, it makes no difference but is a good excuse to drink beer
If you have the original vinyl inside the bow have a look behing it for numbers done in permanent marker, that's how technical normans are, can't remember the order but it should be length/month/year/hull number for month, if you are like me you will have just glued carpet over it before finding out about it.

do you have any registration number ( BW or other) as you could back track the name through that with the relevant authority.

Steve - just don't worry about it. As far as the deities are concerned the only one that matters is more worried about you than your boat, the only recorded things He ever did on a boat were (a) use one one near a beach to talk to a crowd and (b) get in one and calm a storm when His followers were scared alone.
As far as anyone else is concerned - and assuming you are doing a new BSS simply change the name, get it put on the BSS and buy your insurance and licence. Insurance companies have absolutely no way of knowing within a decade how old the thing is, even as you don't, so choose what seems right and stick with it. You'll have as much chance of being right as anyone.
The only other way is the slim chance that it has some Triplex toughened glass in it somewhere because they put a date code in the etching - classic car buffs know about that. The words "Triplex" and "Toughened" are etched one above the other curved and forming two halves of a circle. Under one of the nine letters of toughened will be a "dot". Simply count which letter has the dot, that's the year. I forget how to figure the decade - it was nearly 50 years ago I learnt that - but you can take a stab at it.
The cost of boating is insignificant compared to costs of a young wife and two teenage kids! |

| On my 20 i found the date of 79 scribbled with other stuff behind the carpet in the bow port side also my screen glass is stamped with the BS kite mark and a BS number then FORT T F and 79. Which i assume is possibly the glass age |

Approx. Age and naming issue.
