I was down the pub the other day and someone asked me the very same question 'so what's your boat worth then?' I had the right answer and quotes, thanks Neil
Likewise, i moor down my local riverside boozer and a while back whilst cleaning the boat a chap came over from the beer garden and asked if he could buy the boat as he had seen it around and reminded him of a Norman 20 he had owned many years ago. Told him excluding my many hours labour the boat owes me around £5500 with the trailer but to me it's priceless as the boat is sorted and the way i want it to be. He laughed and said it's over 30 years old and only worth around £1500 which he offered me after laughing back at him, bearing in mind it had a new outboard worth £2300 kindly refused his offer which he then upped to £1800 he then sulked away to finish his pint. I know i would never get what i've put into the boat but to me it now wants for nothing, well not much anyway and the enjoyment it has given the last 2 years is priceless.
Well done for sending him away with a flea in his ear!
The fact that we may never get back what we spend on most of the things we buy, from televisions to furniture to most things, is irrelevant if what we buy gives us a sense of achievement and satisfactio. In the case of our own little boat, we have probably doubled the original purchase price in refurbishment and upgrading but when the weather is fine and we can get away for a couple of days then it is like a little holiday and one never expects the money back on those. Time is precious and we are only here once after all. I suspect that your potential and unwelcome buyer had little interest in anything more than "getting a bargain" - his reaction demonstrates that. Someone else who had a genuine desire to buy a boat would probably not find your expectation unreasonable and the healthy commercial sales market in Norman and other cruisers lends weight to this claim.
