Hi all I am trying to get hold of a short cockpit canopy for my Norman 20.
By short I mean from the windscreen to just over the driving area of the boat to shelter the driver,we need the rest of the rear of the boat to be clear when fishing rods are thrashing about. I have rung quite a number of companies about this and I am getting what I believe are outrageous prices quoted. So I have decided to try making one myself.
The boat was fitted with a canopy before I bought it but it isn’t with it now, the attachments for the frame are still there on the sides but I can’t see how the support bars fit onto the windscreen. Can anyone help me with photos of what makes this possible.
Better still does anyone have a canopy for sale, or perhaps know of one for sale.

On most boats with a windscreen the canopy is a one piece construction, with zip up/zip out panels usually at the rear and on each side. The front of the canopy attaches to the screen and is pulled over the frame and fastened down at the stern. Its the tension of the canopy that keeps the frame in position, and normally the frame is not attached to the windscreen only the canopy. This also helps when folding down the canopy.
It you are only going for a short canopy you are going to need a fairly substantial frame or make up brackets on the screen and frame and get your friendly caravan/camping shop to give/sell you some tube and fittings.
How good are your woodworking skills, get a sheet of ply and make a hard top it might work out eaiser and cheaper.

My canopy for my 20 is a two-piece affair, as the previous owner had it made specially so that he could have a short canopy for sea spray protection, and add the remainder for full weather protection. I've got a pic showing the short canopy "up" which should at least give you pointers!
First attempt at adding a pic to the forum, here goes.
I dont know how much just that part plus frame would be, but for guidance the whole two part canopy, two frames, plus a tonneau cover as well came in at just under £2000. I believe that this was back in 2000, or thereabouts. |

Thanks all for the replies, I am interested in the wooden hardtop idea, I have seen a Norman 20 on the Norman web site with a DIY built wheel house which looks ideal. The name of the boat is "MAI TAI"
I cant find any contact detail for the owner in order to get more photos and dimensions from them. Can anyone help with this?

| If you look at the norman 20 mark11 in the "Norman range"section from the homepage it shows apractical hardtop that was fitted as standard to the mark 11 |
