After i took the boat off the water back in October i noticed a war wound very low down below water line about 3 to 4 inches above the keel where i have obviously clunked something underwater. It is only a graze about a couple of inches long and about 4/5mm deep. Question is it worth filling or gel coating or epoxy resin or whatever before i apply the antifoul ?
Had a tap around and hull seems pretty thick in that area.
If there is any danger of it being deep enough to be through the gelcoat then I would clean it out abrade the surrounding are and epoxy it.
To prevent water ingress into the fibbers more than anything. Epoxy sticks better to GRP than GRP???!!! so is better for repairs. If any doubt about structure, whack on a layer of epoxy friendly cloth.
Cheers Dean, it's def through the gel coat, had another look this morning and at end of gash there is also a small five pence piece size hollow where it looks like that took the hit then gashed the side. Also a 2ft long mark down the antifoul.
Think i know when it happened as early last season the navigation trust cut a load of large overhanging willow tree trunks/branches on a large stretch of the Avon. In there wisdom they left a lot of them afloat relying on a flood at sometime to wash them down to the weirs to get retrieved but no flood happened and especially where i moor we had pockets of tree bits sticking up due to the river being very low which with other debris made little islands. I hit what i think was an submerged log which banged the boat and even clattered the outboard which shot up in the air. Thought it was going to fall off Did report the issues to them but nothing was done.
