The questions in the title! Finally replacing my 15... Had a 50 stroke Yamaha lined up but turned out to be a scam... (got very close to paying!) There a nice looking Yamaha 40 with low hours. Will it get my Norman 18 on the plane? Is it underpowered for the sea?

| borderline as the boffs reckon at least 50 hp per tonne ,a 40 may plan if the conditions were perfect |

Remember the extra weight of a large 4 stroke lump.
Also please check out the strength of the transom before buying/ adding the motor , Older 18's / 20's can suffer from weakened transoms & may need strengthening

Thanks Adi, with help and advice from some of the Forum members I am doing a full restoration of the transom using the 'cut the top off, dig the rot out, replace with wood and epoxy and put the top back on' method. And for a belt and braces measure Im bolting a piece of marine grade stainless steel across the back extending beyond the transom. I looked at the original brochure and the top engine was 100hp which in those days i think was around 160kgs... This 50HP is 108kgs and with the rebuilt transom (which should hopefully be stronger than when new) Im reasonably confident it will be OK.
Any thoughts/opinions will be gratefully received!

Remember that the damp will have found it's way down to the bottom if the top is rotten, the top may be dry and good but the bottom may still be rotten, do some test drillings all over before loading it up.
When it's done can I have a go?

Thanks DF, When we put the aux motor bracket on (the spring loaded type) we cut away the fibre glass from inside and essentially vacuumed where the wood used to be! It was completely dry but totally gone. Replaced that with a couple of inches of ply on the inside and a slab of stainless steel on the outside. Im guessing that will be what we find inside the transom. The clamps that hold on the suzuki 15 bend the grp suspiciously far inwards... and flex a little more that you would expect. So we will totally remove any material all the way as far as we can go, replace, and extend this stainless plate well beyond the v shape of the transom. Probably reinforce the points at which we bolt with ply at the far ends of the steel. Hopefully this will spread the load enough.
And, yes, your are more than welcome to come and have a go!! Im in North Berwick, but with my high thrust Yamaha 50 I reckon I can get to you in about an hour, wherever you live!! :-)
