It does sometimes seem that as soon as "marine" features in a product title then the cost goes through the roof.
I've been considering getting a little TV/DVD for our Norman but capable of running on 12volts. Despite the fact that all flat panels run on 12 volts, very few feature an external power supply - except those "marine" versions at twice the price.
Having popped into our local Morrisons today, they have a Techwood 12 inch LED TV/DVD combo for £109 pounds which apparently comes with an external main supply and is capable of operating on a cigar lighter cable at around £10 on eBay. You're never going to get 3D perforance at this price but even just as a device capable of showing DVDs is probably going to be a better bet that the car devices from your local Halfords. It does also, apparently, not suffer from the tuning problems of certain of the larger Techwood models so is perfectly usable as a Freeview set as well.
Just got to convince the domestic authorities now that we need a set at all! |

You will need a stabilised 12v to run it properly, they are very prone to cutting off if a water pump cuts in or burning out the backlight very quickly if the engines running as the volts are too high.

I got one through ebay, I think maplins do one as well, 10-16V in and a steady 12V out, more efficient than an inverter as long as you switch it off when not using the tv.

Just a thought but we use a laptop which we can charge from the boat battery using a £10 charger from E bay and a Freeview USB card also from E bay which came with the software+ an ariel and even a remote for £8 from china.
for this price we can recive 80 channels and the added bonus is it is easy to drop into a rucksack and take home when not in use. |

We have a 15" LCD with DVD (ASDA) that we have owned for around 2-3yrs.
It runs of a 12V PSU , however voltage drop means it is virtually useless where we need to have it for comfortable viewing.
So - We run on a Maplin 150W inverter , Not the best way I guess , but we have no problems at all with battery drainage (1x110AH leisure & 1x75AH starter (Not used often!))
Now we used to have problems getting a good signal (Having to utilise a long pole & Aerial on the bank , now with the boost in Digital signals we can get all freeview with the aerial attached to the mast light !!!
Keeps Chez happy !!!
