Hi - am getting closer to my Norman 20 being ready for its BSC for the first time in 25 years, but have kind of run into a problem with the outboard - basically I can't get it to start!
Does anyone have any recommendations of a boat yard within a reasonable distance of the Surrey / Berkshire / Hampshire borders? Ideally around Reading or Windsor would be good.
I'm hoping to find someone to be able to service the outboard, and also a general finishing up ready for the BSC. I believe that I have everything in place, but an experienced pair of eyes to give the final once over - or even a boatyard that would carry out the BSC too.
Obviously owning a boat means that I am now officially skint, so a good price for the servicing would be a bonus! :) |

I use red line outboard adingdon who service my outboard for 200 plus parts .Friends use better boating reading i have not used them yet mayge in the future

| £200 plus parts sounds to be a hell of a lot of money for an outboard service to me! Or am I totally out of touch? I can get a major service for my Octavia for that! |

Outboard service for £200 not including parts sounds expensive to me too, do they come out to your boat for that price?

Anything on the Thames is likely to prove expensive - it's the playground of the rich remember.
Try Chertsey Meads - here: http://www.chertseymeadsmarine.co.uk/
Chertsey Meads is a bit of an emporium of old boats and drives etc, they used to run a Seamaster 30 hire fleet out of the yard but sold the last one a couple of years back. Defo down market but understand boats.
Or try Kings Marine a little further on down who are a bit more up-market but not up to Harleyford or Panton Hook prices (yet!) http://www.kingsmarine.co.uk/ They do specialise in outboards. Ask for Michael - you'll not get too much sense out of some of the others who also work for Bates who share the premises. Mind you - they'll sell you a nice £1/4 mill Fairline! Michael is a very good outboard engineer.
The cost of boating is insignificant compared to costs of a young wife and two teenage kids! |

| Many thanks for the replies. I tried Better Boating, but they don't do outboards themselves so would have to sub it out (adding to the expense). Spoke with a friendly chap at Chertey Meads, and will be taking the boat there at the weekend for him to have a look at and talk about pricing. |

Why not have a go at getting some advice here.
If you post your engine details i`m sure some ideas will come in.
An engine service on an outboard is within most peoples capability.
Only one way to learn.

Hi Paul - this is something that I've considered. I'm not averse to working on engines, and have spent many happy hours tinering away with cars and motorbikes. However, I'm looking more for peace of mind to know that I'm not going to be suddenly stranded because of something silly I've overlooked - at least if I have a "qualified" person work on it, I'll have some comeback should something go wrong!
The other factor really is time - I'm hoping to get the boat through its BSC in the next week or two, and at least take it out on the water to check that all is 100% with the boat before I look at all of the aesthetic changes that I want to make over winter. I'm finding that I don't have the time to get everything prepped before the forecasted bad weather is upon us, and I desparate to get on the water. |

| What size outboard are we looking at ? as my Mariner 9.9 cost £70 including engine and lower leg oils and that included the marina slipping the boat and relaunching to change the lower leg oil. It was only it's first service mind after 20 hours so no plugs or impellor changed. |

Do that if you prefer this time, but if you`re used to bikes and cars an outboard is simple.
There are plenty of workshop manuals online.
You will need yo get to know the engine when you`re cruising.
It`s good if you can get a friendly fellow boater to show you.
Maybe when your up and running someone can show you for the next time,
