Hi Folks new on here!
Just bought our 2nd boat a Norman 23 1980 after 14 yers off the water it has a 15hp Honda engine with a square casing so looks old ,runs very well but not charging the battery, other half is a qualified LPG /gas engineer with a certificate for boats but electrics are a no go. Any advice on what to start looking for ?

Is it supposed to charge the battery??? Some elec start did not have charging coils.
Failing that it is probably the regulator..... you may need a sparky to check it for you.
Do you have any photos of inside the engine casing... that would help.

Hi Dean.
Presumed it would charge the battery but have not got photos of engine will probably have to seek advice from a sparky found two unattached wires with connectors but cannot see where they go !
I think it should be charging as there is a green charging light on the control panel which lights when cruisng.

I have a workshop manual on disk for all the older Hondas engines give me the Serial No and I will see what I can do hopefully by the week end

| Pretty sure on Honda outboards the green light indicates oil pressure not electrical charging. |

Sounds like my Honda 1988 BF15.
The green light indicates the oil pressure on mine.
There are a couple of loose bullet connection leads on my engine too.
Whenever mine has stopped charging it`s always the fuse that`s blown, if that goes it wont charge. |

Hi
The green light is on the side of the console which we thought was a charge light is the oil light on the engine ? Sorry to sound thick but which fuse was preventing the charging.

Someone may post a diagram.
If you sit in the boat facing the engine its the left side at the side of the starter motor.
There are quite a few wires in the area and you will see a plastic tube with a knurled end.
It`s slotted very tightly into a rubber type housing.
The tube unscrews and a fuse is located inside.
If your very lucky a spare is located in a waterproof sleeve just in front of it.
Its a special fuse I believe 15A that`s a Honda part, always a good idea to carry a spare or if youre me 2 spares.
It`s quite obvious it looks like a car radio inline fuse and its where the wires are.

Hi Thanks but my stupid email will not show the image however just to put a spanner in the works I now realise that there is a sticker under the green light which says charging, when cruising this is lit if fuse was blown would that work ? Checked battery no problem maybe wiring between but apprecaite your advice very much

Lack of oil pressure would be potentially be terminal to the engine whereas the inability to charge is an inconvenience.
As far as I can see the oil pressure light is a standard feature which is just relayed to the dash.
The indication I have on the dash for the charging failure is a voltmeter.
The voltage drops rapidly when it`s not charging.
The green light is still lit when the system isn`t charging.

Thanks a lot for your help all working now, I think the previous owner thought it was a charging light on the console and actually put a sticker on it, the oil light on the engine is blanked off and wired up to the console hence the confusion all OK Cheers
