Hi all. The refurbishment of my Norman 20 that has been out of the water for 25 years continues, and I'm nearly there and ready for a BSC examination. Anyway, reading through the BSC guidelines, it states that the battery / batteries should be fixed in place and vented.
Now, all of the electrics are in the starboard banch seat behind the captains chair, so was planning on keeping this. Would I be best to construct some kind of battery box for my two batteries, bolted through to the side of the enclosure (on the inboard side - not the outside of the hull!!!)? Also, for ventilation, would a ventilated grill from my local B&Q suffice?
Does anyone with a 20 have any pics of how they've done it? |

Vented - Can hydrogen gas escape? Bearing in mind hydrogen is the smallest atom around, any small gap, crack or hole will let it out. As long as it can escape upwards all is OK. Have you ever tried storing hydrogen gas?
Secured - As long as they can't fall over it will pass. A webbing strap screwed to a bulkhead will suffice. Blocked in with a strip of well fitted wood is good too.
Don't get too hung up on 'expensive' marine solutions. Keep it simple.

James hi,
Totally agree with Deano, keep it simple. My only observation would be, and this is from personal experience on my 20, two batteries are heavy and both behind the captains chair, so when you are sailing solo or with family/crew who dont always understand the fine art of loading you could end up with all the weight on one side.
You can always ballast the lockers on the other side with sand or beer if you didn't want to reposition the batteries.

You've got the Captains seat to STARBOARD?? That's a bit unusual on a 20 where normally the helm is to port and the gas locker to starboard as is the galley. Batteries then most often live under the port cockpit locker to keep the boat trimmed against the weight of the gas bottle and all the galley kit and stores to starboard.
Wherever you do put them I'd seriously consider the weight and whether they might not be better opposite to the galley as an alternative to adding ballast.
Normally they live in a Towsure-type £11 plastic box as used in caravans, blocked, wedged, screwed or strapped in place, and with a cover so nothing can short out the terminals accidently and cause a fire.
The cost of boating is insignificant compared to costs of a young wife and two teenage kids! |
