Does anyone know of the ramifications of changing a boats name?
Legally, aswell as, the cultural factors i,e, bad luck. We'd like to change to a name that has more meaning for us.
I have read of some ceremonies ( bloody Google again!!!) which include drinking, and nude dancing on the tow-path But I would like to avoid said rites as I don't really have the time for Magistrates courts!!!! So any input will be valuable knowledge for me.

| When i bought my boat marina owner who i bought it from said no problem but to contact your insurer and local navigation trust who licence my water if it's mid term to change the name. As my boat was not afloat when i bought it he said it was only considered bad luck to change it if the boat was afloat so do it before lauching which we did. |

Virgins, midnight, a sacrifice and copious amounts of alcohol should sort it without too many bad omens. Oh and the insurance and licence thing!

Will have no problems with alcohol, or sacrifice ( as the dog is on his last warning!!!). It's finding the virgin that's going to be a real trial .
Still, I will complete the legal stuff first. |

| To say changing a boats name gives the boat bad luck is nonsense it just merely changes the luck of said boat. Legally you just need to notify water authority of your area and your insurers, and if you change the name at the same time you renew your licence you will not be charged. |

What a stuff of nonsense, such clap trap in these enlightened times!
OK this is what I'm going to do when I'm ready to rename the boat, just to be on the good side of the boat fairey (opps sorry not p.c.) boat spirit. Sell the boat to my sister for 5p get her to name it, put the new name on the boat then buy it back for 10p (5p for her trouble and risk). Then do the paperwork with a clear conscience. That seems at least to pay a nodding respect towards old traditions and folklore but I must say the drinking and virgin hunting (mmm needles and haystacks come to mind here)varriation seems more fun. Still 'whatever floats your boat' as they say.

You see, you say it's nonsense but then you are getting your sister to take all the risks, just in case it's true.
Oh, and I just wanted to point out that you don't need to rename a boat in order to get drunk and dance naked on the towpath. You can do that any time. |

Well observed Ian, yep I'm err hedging my bets!!! As I said just to be on the good side of neptune or whoever is responsible for the Thames in the 'other world'.
If your talking from experience regarding the towpath behavior then more details please we need lessons in life! This could run and run! lol |
