I am in the process of completing a project on a 17ft Norman (Callumcraft) and have now got to make a big decision. As the boat was completely gutted when I bought it, I don't know the true side that the Steering controls should be fitted. Having looked at many images on the net there doesn't seem to be any standard.
As I am also new to the watercraft scene, can anyone please tell me what laws regarding licensing etc need to be completed befor I take to the water.

There is no hard and fast rule for helm position but everything I build or fit out I have helm to port. Reason is you pass an oncoming craft port to port in a narrow, or indeed, any channel, be that canal, port, river, so vision down the port side is best to avoid scrapes if it gets a bit tight,
On a canal of course it is ALWAYS a bit tight!
For rules and regs, you can do no better than to stick to BSS guidelines, which you can download in 9 separate parts (if you actually need all 9) from here: http://www.boatsafetyscheme.com/site/2ndedBSSEssentialGuide_212.asp, scroll down to download each part separately.
Most Authorities will require a Boat Safety Scheme pass certificate, they will also need to see you have insurance, all before they will issue a licence - which you also have to pay for of course.
Any details you need - come back and ASK. ASking beats expensive mistakes. Good Luck.

I agree with Clive - In the UK a boat is the one of the only things that benefit from being a left hooker.

I've only ever had port hand helm positions on boats so would probably be lost with anything different.

Worldwide from the local canal to the middle of the ocean you drive on the right, ie pass port side to port side. Yet most power/ski boats have their helm position on the right. Have never quite got my head around that.?????
Put your helm on the left, makes life much simpler in confined waters.

Starboard or the righthand side is called that because originally it was called the steerboard side, back in the days when steering was done with a sweep (large oar). The port side, left was the side that went against the dock which would damage the steering sweep.
SO US SPORTS BOATS HAVE GOT IT RIGHT.
