we have booked a weeks holiday on the Norfolk broads. starting at Stalham.I intend to stay above braydon water and explore below there next year.the question is,good places to stop,places to visit and is there any little known places that the holiday makers dont know about.I did visit a candle maker years ago but dont know where!where are the best over night stops?we have a 9 year old and a 2 year old.good food shop near Stalham for supplies.and best places to eat/drink.and would anyone like to meet up while we are there?
I also have some sad news that gold fish is up for sale on evil bay.(hence the holiday)my health is worse and she is just too small for me.the good news is I will be looking for something bigger (cheap!)thanks in advance for the help and info.

I believe there is a Tescos in Stalham.
With kids, Biwilderwood just out of Horning is a good day, a bit pricey, but OK for a whole day out if you take your own food. You can walk from the moorings in Horning, but you will need a buggy for the little one. It now has it's own bus stop so I guess you can bus from Horning.
Anything above Potter will be off the track for most, but it depends if your boat will go through.

Thanks Deano,we have hired a low boat this time so we can get under all the bridges.We try to avoid Tesco if we can as we like to support the local shops.We are thinking of going wroxham direction exploring salhouse broad and the others.In the past I found a private broad but cant remember where!then back towards potter heigham and beyond.Can I get a map which shows moorings,also any good guides of the area.

Yes there is a Tesco at Stalham very close to the boatyards. There is also the Museum of the Broads at Stalham staithe.
On the first night we always stay at How Hill- there is a small museum there and a wildlife walk. You might also meet the reed cutter who gives talks there plus there are small electric boats so you can see the narrow waterways the other boats cannot reach. Dont remember how often they run.
We usually stock up at Wroxham (Roys is the biggest village shop in the world and there is a McDonalds) on our way to Coltishall - a very pretty trip.
The candle maker was at Stokesby but had closed down when we were there last year. However there is a good pub with good food plus a shop and a post office.
On the last night we stay at How Hill as this gives an easy one and half hour trip back to Stalham.
Your best bet for things of interest is to call the Broads Authority on 01603 610734 and ask for a copy of their FREE paper - The Broadcaster - which gives all the info you need on events, places of interest, places to eat etc.
Richardsons sell maps - get the Broads Authority map if you can - dearer but more accurate for moorings etc.

I think the private broad must be "Black Horse Broad" just past Horning. Also known as Hoveton Little Broad.
On the northern side the only places where you'll find few boaters are above Potter bridge. But that's no bad thing if you can get under. Horsey is lovely and the Nelsons Head one of my favourite pubs. West Somerton is quiet although I'm not sure if the Lion is still open. There's a great walk to the sea from either West Somerton to Winterton or from Horsey to Horsey Gap and lots of seals. There's also a very "quaint" or even wierd tea rooms on the Horsey route.
The Ferry at Stokesby is always worth a visit and the run down to Coltishall is marvellous especially early morning and you are spoilt for pubs there. The Kings Head, The Red Lion and The Recruiting Seargeant. The Rising Sun is not so good!
Personally I prefer life down south nowadays. Better pubs and more to be visited!

thanks Trev.we are getting a boat called clear gem (its low)as we are going from stalham and cant get the boat till 4pm we were going to moor within an hour or so of the boat yard.The idea was (with any ideas from all on here)to explore the north part.Then early next year explore the south,then late next year go to where we liked the most.we have earmarked bewilderwood and the RAF place.we went many years ago on the broads but have been above potter heigham or past wroxham and only visited salhouse,so we appreciate any advice.(where is a pike hot spot?)many thanks again.

A hour from stalham I would head for sutton staithe, the pub there did good grub and was very freindly last year, it was one of the better ones we visited on the northern part.
