What type of steering - straight rack or the type with the coil spring around a 100mm "cog" or circular rack?
If the first - the rack is probably knackered, if the 2nd the cog is knackered as the coil of the steering inner should not be capable of moving away from its mesh position. It could of course be a heavy duty steering with a light duty cable in - previous owner being foolishly economical when he changed it. That is worth checking.
As for the rack and pinion type, some racks were nylon and were replaceable, whether or not you can still get them I do not know. However a short term solution might be to insert a strip of shim material behind the rack to force it onto the pinion to prevent it slipping, unless of course it is too far gone.
It sounds like you probably need to invest £150 or so and buy new steering.
Edit , you said rotary, sorry. Senior moment there. Check with back of steering box off as the coil should have no space to slip in the port helm, i.e. push mode. or indeed in any mode. The circular casing should keep it well into the rack.
Starboard helm tightens it onto the rack which is why stbd is no problem.
The cost of boating is insignificant compared to costs of a young wife and two teenage kids! |
