Removed all the top Ply from the front bed area this afternoon , in a sorry state after damp over the last 2 seasons of non use.
No probs with replacing that , However the bearer that runs across the bow needs sorting too - Would like to replace with something more substantial (3x2 ?) however will glassing this to the hull be sufficient ? Or should I glass some supports in to the hull & bolt the cross member in ?
Any comments ? Remember I'm 6'6 & Weigh a little more than most

Adi, is this a Vee berth you're talking about? Normally the bearer for the top triangle ply at the wide end is fixed at the Vee where there is usually a ply front between the berths. Glue and screw is sufficient in that area and 2 x 1 (inches of course) a large enough bearer if it only spans the two side sections of the bunks as it is supported in the middle. The ends are normally fixed to the side stringers, but often we use another vertical batten to support those ends as well.
I'm not sure I'm making that very clear?
The cost of boating is insignificant compared to costs of a young wife and two teenage kids!
Todays further exploratory work has removed a rotten 3x1 cross member that was glassed into the hull in the vee , Its obviously done a good job over the last 43 yrs so will replace.
All the new ply is cut from the original templates so will hopefully fit (With a little trimming)
Gave Dad 3 part tins of stain / varnish to start the job , unfortunately his 73 yr old brain thought it would be a good idea to mix them together to ensure a good all over cover - result , 1 big tin of a sticky mess . Will purchase some more tomorrow !
Have a mad idea to try & get it all done & BSS before the Aug BHol so we can get out (Chez is presently in Wales visiting her Mum , so I have time now to sort the old tub out!)
