My next cruise would require negotiating the Preston Brook Tunnel. I have checked the clearance (air draught) and it looks bl***y tight to me. I don't want to take out the windscreen and frame of my 22 "Greyling"!!
If anyone has recently gone through in a Norman how did you find the headroom and which Norman have you got.

If you have the original standard fitted GRP windscreen its no problem, plenty of clearance. Went through last year in a 32.
You have 3 tunnels saltesford, barnton and preston brook.

Just looked at you boat on my Normans, you should have plenty of clearance with that screen. |

You should have no problems - Our 22 clears Harecastle & thats err quite low !
Check out the headroom in Dudley Tunnel - Not much chance of clearing that !!!

Thanks Adi & LM, feel more confidant with what you have said, Preston Brook tunnel here I come.
Now Harecastle I would like to do, had looked at headroom and decided NOT to try it. Would be interested to learn if the screen on your (Adi) 22 is the same pattern as mine, "Greyling" pictured in the Norman Register 3 centre column just under halfway down. Also what was the spare headroom?
Have noted the tunnels mentioned as ok in my Nicholson waterways guide

Yr 22 looks similar to ours,
We've been thru Harecastle 4 times in our 22 , in places you think its getting low but no probs really
There are lower bridges in Stoke (Again no problems) You will have to lower your mast light tho !!
For me - Harecastle is a great experience & the tunnel keepers are very good at putting cruisers through in the correct order

Not sure how far you are cruising up past Preston Brook , but please take in the Anderton Lift onto the River Weaver (Prob a 1-2 hr cruise)
Don't book it (was £10) we just turned up & took a space (not a prob in a cruiser)
Moorings at Northwich on the river are great (Unlike the cut!) - The Town has a good selection of shops & pubs
To continue to Harecastle from Anderton is around 2 days (although we have done it in 1!!! )

Thanks again Adi most helpful. Yes our 22s look to be of same mark/era.
Will most certainly take the trip via Anderton Boat lift. Have visited it by road but not yet in "Greyling". Plenty to look forward to there.
Have to say I had this fear of reducing headroom in the tunnels and having to try to get out going astern and in the dark!!! Nightmare. Mind you no doubt someone somewhere has had to do it??

have done them tunnels many times in my 23( Little Lottie )with plenty of head room. just watch if you have a flag pole on the side rear gunwall. they tend to rub if they big ones. otherwise is a very pleasent trip

I have to say I have a bit of a tunnel fetish (Oo err missus) Standedge is on my top list of priorities but they wont let plastic thru 
Last yr we broke down on Dad Sewer Tube in Blisworth Tunnel with about 150yds to go - The old BMC wouldnt restart (Diesel Bug) leaving me to walk the boat out on my hands standing on the roof laughing all the way (Chez didnt find it so funny!)
At least I could have legged it thru the low profile of Harecastle !

Thanks for the 'low down' on the tunnels. Hope to do this cruise in September but Jean has mutinied, claustrophobia the excuse!! I think she just don't want to do all them locks.
Anyway if you are out and about on the cut and see "Greyling" give us a shout, you never know might be near a pub to have a pint and share a few tales.

Whats the entrance to standedge like? Do you recon an unofficial dinghy trip could be done when it's shut? Not that I'm suggesting anything of course as that would be wrong, but if anything like that was to not take place I'd quite fancy being one of the people to not do it
I think I'd borrow an electric outboard to not do it with though as a 2 stroke would stink in there.

| Sorry, df, but Standedge is locked up both ends with big metal gates when it's not manned so I think the chances of an "unofficial" trip with an electric-powered dinghy are slim to say the least! |

talking of tunnels.. we are looking to bring our 32 down the rochdale canal from leeds in a couple of weeks....would it have enough clearance for the M62 new tunnel? has anyone gone through in one?
