Hi - I am struggling to find my hull identification number!
It would appear that a previous owner has fibreglassed over the entire inside of the bows, meaning that the original hull is not visible.
Does anyone have any idea how I could go about finding the identity of my Norman 20? For some background info, the previous owner bought it 25 years ago from a mariner in lieu of mooring fees owed by whoever had it moored there (they had not been to the boat for many years by all accounts). this means that the vendor did not know the number either, so I'm a little stumped about insuring / registering the boat!

apparently norman only used to write the hull numbers on under the bows in pen !!! so the chances are its long gone ive had 2 normans now and never seen a number yet!!

So how does one go about registering it for insurance, as all policies seem to need it?
A quick Google shows that some coutries will issue you with a HIN when you register the boat - is this the way to go about it?

Most older boats don't have HIN, just a make & model should satisfy an insurer, some like a photo or two to prove it exists.
A bss or survey can be done using just name or reg. number if it doesn't have both, licencing authorities only need a name if not previously registered.
My RLM doesn't have a HIN that I know of either, it may have done 35 years ago but not now, I have no trouble with insurance companies.

We can take a stab at it for you if you post a pic of the boat from the stern looking forwards as Norman did change3 how they arranged topsides and lockers and hatch over the years.
Ok, It won't be that accurate but should get within a few years or so and will be the best that could be done. To my knowledge there were 3, perhaps 4, topsides changes so identifying which one you have ought to allow many to venture opinions close enough for insurance. After all, to be realistic - they have to be at least 40 years old, the odd 5 or 6 more is hardly here or there!
The cost of boating is insignificant compared to costs of a young wife and two teenage kids! |

My 20 has scribble in the bow with 79 on it so thats what insure it as. Bear in mind the older you insure it as the more likely you might have to have a survey done if over a certain size at sometime i believe. Craftinsure only quote up to 40 year old boats on line.
I bought my boat from a mariner as built around 1970 so glad i found the date inside to make her newer. |
