Not one, but two, shameless plugs!
The Cotswold Canals Trust is working to implement a small scale hydro power scheme utilising surplus water flowing down the Stroudwater Canal. The aim of the project is to derive a long term sustainable income to help support the maintenance and operation of restored sections of the Cotswold Canals into the future.
The EnergyShare scheme (run by River Cottage and British Gas) provides funding but only to those schemes that get enough votes.
So if you'd like to vote (and if you can be bothered), go here:

and click the "Support This Group" button.
You have to register to vote (only needs user name, password and a partial postcode - use GL6 if you want). The deadline for voting is June 30th.
And the second, and potentially more interesting, shameless plug:
The first weekend of 2nd June 2012 is the National Trailboat Festival and will be here on the recently restored section of the Cotswold Canal. There will be 6 miles of landlocked canal just begging for some boaty action. So if you fancy boating on a canal that has not seen any significant boating for 50-odd years:

(And you never know, us CCT volunteers may have managed to finish the slipway by then so there is a reasonable chance you will be able to slip you boat into the water...)

What a clever idea, the power generation not the meet, (although thats good as well).
OK hydro power has been around for a while now but to apply it on this scale to a project to provide local funding is good and as its for the benefit of canal restoration that ticks all the boxes. Signed up as requested good luck.
P.S remind me /us nearer the time re trailer meet the boat might be ready by then! |

Following on this theme- This might be of interest, as I am sure a lot of Members will have boats along this route. My boat is moored at Radcot, so I hope to see them on the 2nd September

| John, above the roundhouse approximately 1 1/4 mile unless a tree has unexpectedly gone for a swim. You keep coming up past the old Inglesham manor/wharf and past the inlet of the river Cole until you come to a 90 degree right turn, just after which is a small lagoon on the left with a Freeman 22 in it and space for one more boat, (mine eventually!) The Freeman regularly pops down to Radcott as the owner has/had a mooring there as well. You can go up further although long 'grass' type weed is sometimes present and after about another 1/2 mile turning around is only achievable by spinning the boat around by hand. Its a nice spot although limited in the direction of travel by boat. Biggest boat I've seen up just beyond 'our lagoon' was a 30 ft live aboard narrow boat and he managed to turn around after staying a few days. |

Hi all
Last year we were moored at Radcot the low water levels forced most boats into house boats. We moved to the lees near Benson what are the water levels this year. the mooring company promised to desilt the mooring

Good thinking, John. Can't believe I failed to plug that one. The plans for the two routes are currently going back and forth but I imagine they will settle down eventually! |

IanM - I have an interest in the canal. I work in Stroud, and there is a land-locked length of canal about 50 metres from my office window. I think I will have retired before I am able to commute to work by boat!
Ken - Thanks for that. I only got my mooring at Radcot this year and so far haven't even been upstream as far as Lechlade. Still it will be interesting to explore the upper reaches some time.
newcommer - we are moored on the island, on the "old" Thames side, so silting up is not a problem as far as I am aware. Boats in the other cut seem to come and go, so I assume there must be some water there.
