this Im sure has been covered before but cant find the answer.all the outboards on the boats at my marina are kept in the water which attracts weeds (I clear mine off every week)why dont people have the outboard tilted out of the water?

I don't know, but my guess is therefore ... if the motor was left tilted up and the tilt mechanism failed when the boat was unattended it could cause problems.

That is something I have pondered in the past. Like pretty much everyone else around us, we kept the outboard in the water all the time and, as you say, it weeds up and in our case it also suffered from fresh water mussels clogging up the water intake. So one time I tilted it and left it.
A couple of weeks later I noticed that there was an accumulation of oil/grease on the lowest point of the engine housing and a quick visual inspection gave no clues as to where it came from. So it got un-tilted and pretty much left there! There was also a niggling worry that continually tilting up and down would put extra strain on the rather old wiring and remote cables.
