Hi all,

I've been watching a few videos on repairing fibreglass on www.youtube.com. After sanding/grinding back the section of fibreglass around the hole in preparation for the repair, the guys in the videos wipe the area down with acetone. I was just wondering is there any particular reason for using acetone or is white spirit okay for getting rid of the dust etc.?

They use acetone for cleaning brushes etc before the resin goes hard so they would have it readily available. So presumably its the best stuff to use.

they use acetone as this slightly softens and totally cleans the surface repair area, so giving a better bond to the repair.

White spirit will contain non volatile components that will reduce the adhesion of new resin. Acetone softens the old resin as mentions and evaporates , it can also be used as a resin thinner (I wouldn't).

Acetone is best for cleaning as it evaropates very quickly, styrene can be used to partially reactivate old grp and thin polyester resin.

During my recent glassing adventures I purchased some acetone for cleaning - well worth the money !

Not as cheap in small doses - £6 per liter (Compared with £25 for 25lts) it will also save your brushes as you progress (That is brushes from a GRP merchant - cheap brushes will melt in acetone & lose bristles)

Worth checking out your local GRP man rather than buying from a chandlery - 2.5kgs of resin & hardener set me back around £15 - would have cost around £40 otherwise - same story with matting.
