We need to purchase a new outboard. We have a 23 ft boat, the outboard on came with the boat when purchased. Would appreciate recommendations please.

My Norman 23 has a pre-1987 Honda 9.9 hp. It still runs superbly and seems miserly in its use of fuel. It doesn't surprise me that people speak so highly of Honda outboards.

If you can afford it, get a Honda.

What engine is currently fitted and what's wrong with it?

I've got a 15hp 2016 Tohatsu (before they changed the fuel system). I had loads of trouble keeping it running. After lots of back and forth with Tohatsu and tonnes of research and speaking to other owners, we managed to get it running reliably but it cost us a couple of seasons. Apparently a known issue with the Tohatsu carbs.

If you go Tohatsu, get an EFI over carb (which I think all new ones are)

I'd avoid the cheap chinese ones, they will be ok for a few years but I've heard bad reports when it comes to maintaining them with crap threads and poor castings, that's assuming spares are available.
As said 9.9-15hp 4 stroke longshaft should do you nicely, yamaha and mariner are very similar and sometimes same factory and I think the older tohatsu I had was mariner based, my little suzuki 2.5 is picky to fuel type as the valves stuck when used on an avgas mix.

You will no doubt get a different recommendation from every member!
The most popular makes are Honda,Yamaha, and Tohatsu.Someone will no doubt wax lyrical about British Seagull!!
For a 23ft boat the 9.9hp will be adequate for canals.For rivers,the 15hp models.
My boat has a Tohatsu and I am very happy with it.
