Posted - 24 Feb 2020 : 13:40:59 Anyone had a tonneau cover made for their Norman?
Our 20's pram cover is looking significantly worse for wear, especially after the recent storms. I want to get a replacement cover, but would prefer a tonneau instead (we'll very very rarely need a cover whilst cruising. Something like this: https://highwaymarinegroup.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Tonneau-Cover-2-300x169.jpg but ideally covering the whole windscreen also.
I've phoned Nauticover and although they can make one, it won't encompass the windscreen and apparently attaches on the inside of the cabin roof near the hatch. Not ideal for a our Norman as we don't have the hatch cover any more, and I would worry about rain coming back into the cabin as the cabin roof by the hatch is fairly level. Also and rain trapped between the windscreen and cabin roof might travel backwards into the cabin.
Anyone know of a company that could help? We are in Somerset if that helps (as companies might need to visit) |

Posted - 17 Jun 2020 : 10:40:03 Thanks Clive, it was challenging doing it on her sewing machine as it struggled to fit it through but definately worth the effort. Looks really good and is so much easier to put on/off than the old pram cover. |

Posted - 13 Jun 2020 : 16:59:23 Very good, well done. Told you that you could do it.
Bet you've saved a bomb plus you and your wife can feel justly proud of the result.

Posted - 13 Jun 2020 : 16:24:58 Cover is on! Unfortuantely we were missing one eyelit for the center of the windscreen (that's why the front top is bulging up) but apart from that we're very happy with our it's looking. Just sprayed it with water repelant and just have to remove the old hoods fixtures and fittings. We are debating running a strip along the center seam.. maybe glued on, to give it a little extra strength and aid waterproofing..

Posted - 06 Jun 2020 : 13:47:10 Scary times. Vicki had made the cover!
Hoping it will fit good. Just fitted the bungee eyelets today and will hopefully try it on for size when the wind dies down in a couple of days.
One thing we would like to do, is glue an addition strip along the center seam. Is there a particular strong glue that remains flexible anyone can recommend?
Thanks. |

Posted - 27 Feb 2020 : 12:24:17 Wow, now that's some homework!
Thanks Clive. Funny enough my wife is fairly good as sewing. I think we might just give it a try!
Many thanks indeed for all the info! |

Posted - 24 Feb 2020 : 15:18:29 Examples of a tonneau type hood I made for a Norman 18.5. I used a pram hood fabric - meaning for perambulators or buggies not boat or car hoods. It's a canvass-type exterior vinyl lined - easy to sew.
And the same material is this:

Posted - 24 Feb 2020 : 15:02:58 Make one - it really isn't hard. You can buy the fabric on e-bay that will sew on your average sewing machine using a jeans needle, no need for heavy hood fabric as it is presumably just a rain cover.
You can buy lift-the-dot poppers for the windscreen fittings you already got, you can buy little fender hooks and rubber tie-downs similar to what is on your hood, you can buy brass eyelets also from Ebay that come as a set with a hole punch and tool to set the eyelets in and in fact they'll probably hook down onto existing hooks with the rubber ties.
Come on now, be adventurous - have a go! Most fabrics are 54 inches wide so you'll be joining two widths together to cover the Norman 20 cockpit.
I assume SWMBO has a sewing machine? If not go buy a 2nd hand one and you can hem your own prom dresses lol. Cost for a decent Janome around £100. DON'T buy singer - plastic cogs inside, Janome is all metal working parts.
Here - I've done all the work for you:-
