This query from Chris,
In March I bought a 1973 Norman 23 and just as I'm sure many have also discovered with their 1st boat, a) I almost certainly paid too much and b) fine cosmetics can hide diy horrors...
Next spring I intend to rebuild the cockpit, so with some forward planning I'm trying to cost the job.
Thus far, astonishingly, I've found no rotten timber anywhere but - and this leads me to my questions - I'm concerned about the transom. There's no immediately obvious problem with it (assuming I could tell) but if I'm rebuilding the cockpit anyway, that would be the time to sort it out.
Do you, by any chance, happen to know how the Norman 23 transom is constructed? My boat is an outboard version rather than an adaptation.
Also, have you heard of anyone having problems with the transom?
It may well be that the lack of search results answers the 2nd question!

Not sure if the 23's transom is the same as a 20, but I posted a picture of the inside of mine here:

Given the age of the boat and how the topside and motorwell moulding get attached to the hull NOT having rot could be unusual.
See if you can hire or borrow a moisture meter and check the outside of the transom - it will read through the GRP - which will give you a clue, or drill a hole in the top and probe down with a long, thin screwdriver - you can always fill the hole in later with Araldite.
Then you'll know the extent of future work!
