Hi i'm Mark i have only joined the forum in the last week or so as i have just bought my first boat a Norman 23 mk2. I have bought this as a project with a view to using it on a weekend basis, but before that can happen i have quite a few jobs that need doing 1 being a new front screen as i only have half of the screen so 2 out of 4 parts im wondering if anyone has any 2nd hand ones they no longer need or options what i can do to replace the full screen.
The second item need is a new canopy as its worn through on the support bars. Im thinking maybe if i got a 2nd hand one i could cut it up and put a strip glued on from one side to the other (is this a good idea?)
The inside also needs a full refit as over the years it has been changed not for the better in mt view.
On the plus side it has a bsc till June 2022 with a good yamaha outboard.
I'm looking forward to your ideas on the above problems
Thanks
Mark

You certainly have a project on your hands BUT my first boat was a 35ft narrow boat which had been gutted in a fire from bow to stern. From the gunwhales up it was so warped from the heat of the fire the 1st job was to have it all cut off and new sides and roof welded on, this was the only job I did not do myself. Once this was done I completely refitted her, installed engine and gearbox, lined and insulated, plumbed, wired, painted, built furniture, installed kitchen and bathroom and painted her. Luckily I have been in the building trade all my life so it wasn@t too much of a challenge. Stick with it and you will get a sense of achievement like no other, especially when folk admire her and you can say I did it all myself. Good luck mate.

Hi Mark, I don’t have any solutions but I’m in the same “boat” as you, having just bought my first boat which is a Norman 23 in need on plenty tlc. Perhaps not as much as yours (fingers crossed!). Just wanted to say hello and I’m keen to see your journey and pick up tips along the way from you and other forum members.

If you are sewing canopy material for a patch - go to a craft shop and get a leather needle for a sewing machine - ordinary needle might break. That's what we used.

Ok so this is the photo of the boat when i bought her, none of the items indside where mine they are what the previous owner has left behind. I have now removed the roof paneling as you can see they was falling down anyway i have also removed the big silly chair that had been built in there. I then removed the center floor and the raised section on the right as all this was rotten due to the starboard window leaking in. I have also made a start removing all the carpet and latted area to the bow area as this was also very wet and rotten. The port side im leaving in for now so we have somewhere to make a brew which is much needed at times . As the boat still starts and runs on the water we are able to use it as a day boat which is fine for now as it will break up the work by just going out for the odd day and having a relax. As for the rebuild im an electrician by trade so i can do the bulk of the work myself i have many friends in the building game so that should help us get jobs sorted. When all said and done this is a project and will be treated as such it takes as long as it takes. We have a nice quiet secure mooring that im building a decking on first so we have somewhere to sit and watch the world go by

I just made a post in the renovation costs, most of it applies here too.

If you get it useable first and get out on it you will find a lot of your ideas and priorities change as you find out how you are using it, you will be surprised how much upholstery can cost even doing it yourself, we made new internal upholstery for an RLM31 and the foam along cost £300.

Please don't make the mistake of trying to do too much all at once. There have been some fantastic restorations of near-derelict Normans on this site over the years but sadly, many more that have been abandoned through lack of financial resources, lack of time and knowledge or someone just getting fed up with all the work involved while not having a boat in a condition to use and enjoy.

So, full marks for your enthusiasm but please take it one step at a time. Tidy it up without ripping it to pieces then use it for short trips. Over time you can plan the more significant work needed more carefully to tie-in with your time, expertise and pocket.

On the specific canopy issue, my advice FWIW would be to not use glue - it never lasts. Much better to sew-in a small section of compatible material where the wear has occurred using a waxed thread to prevent leakage through the holes. Most domestic sewing machines can cope with the material if used carefully. New canopies do not come cheap but this one looks on the face of it to be repairable for now leaving you some resources for the few essential jobs!!

All the best

Fred

As i said i have just bought the boat and today i have made a big start on pulling all the insides out as it will be having a full refit.

Now as you can see none of the windows will open so i'm looking for ideas how i could change this without it costing the earth

I was being flippant mate, meaning if yours got a ticket, the tester must be friendly. If nothing is fitted though there isn't much to test lol.

I did think about it getting to hot inside in the summer. My solution is on the starboard side there are 2 vents fitted one towards the bow and one in the toilet area. The vent that can be seen in the photo has 2 small fans fitted that extraxt air out of the cabin so they will aid ventalation, also the front cowel that will be removed and a mushroom vent fitted then on the inside there will be a 100mm extractor fan that when running will remove air outwards but if turned off it will allow air to flow inwards. Now i have put my thoughts on here what are your views of them ?

I don't really want to be going to the expense of replacing all the windows

One problem might be that the windows clearly don't open so you cannot satisfy the ventilation requirement.

And it will get extremely hot in the cabin in Summer.

Finally living the dream!

Hehe yes there is a small wood burner on the middle funnel the one to the front used to be for the gas water heater but that is now not on the boat. It only has 12 volt electrics no mains and no gas.
What is the problem with the boat tester ??

You have got optimism by the barrow load mate . Fair play. Don't see many with 2 funnels lol, is one for a coal fire. I also think a few folk will be wanting the BSC blokes telephone no. . Theres guys onthis site will keep you going in the right direction.
