What email client are you using? I just tried the buttons and had outlook popup with email address filled out, if a non microsoft email client you may not have it set as default program to handle email addresses, microsoft like to try and keep you tied to their software if they can.
A right click in firefox over the email button gives you the option to copy email address and you can just paste it into your mail client.

Edit:
I just tried it on a windows 7 pc with no MS email just thunderbird and it came up with an email window no problem.
