The above engine has been serviced and new water cooling bits installed whilst on the canal system. Initially the water indicator jet flowed well and indicated no problem however, over the weeks the jet has slowed and frequently stopped flowing. Sometimes the jet just drips.

The water cooling appears to be flowing ok because the overheating alarm does not indicate a problem. The overheating alarm is working ok. Could this just be the indicator jet blocked? How do I clear it?

Hi
The boat is moored at Littleport and no sign of encrustation so far, The cooling problem was showing before I got to the Grt Ouse. I am due to go to the boat in next ten days and will fire up and take a cruise probably up Brandon Creek and return. I will remove and clear rubber tube before doing so. I will let you know what happens. Thanks for the tip.

I cruised the area in the summer inc Little Ouse, Wissey and Lark. Burwell Lode was heavily weedy by end of July and I struggled to get to Burwell and out again. I did not dare to cruise along Reach Lode it looked impassable. Water tempreture was high. I spent a peaceful couple of nights at the Upware Lock EA temp moorings. Many narrowboats tried to navigate the Wicken Lode without success. I did not try.

Next summer I want to return to the Middle Level and cruise extensively there. My first experience of the Middle Lebel was in November 1973. The only way open then was through the single gate on a level tide from Denver Sluice on to the Old Bedford, Then Forty Foot , Ramsey, Benwick etc through to Old Nene and Kings Dyke to Nene at Peterborough. I spent the winter 'on board' and working that Winter. Moorings had to be carefully selected (next the power station) where the loading bay was high, the level of the Nene is up and down like a yo-yo during the winter. The power station was just upstream of the railway bridge that serves Ely and Norwich. I could barely recognise it in April 2018.

Don't know if it's still an issue on the gt.ouse but when I had an outboard powered boat at st.neots there were lots of zebra mussels about and would latch on to outboards all the time often getting into the cooling system while tiny and growing while in there till blockages occured, I used to use mine regular all year round so they would be flushed out while still small but I heard of others that used their boats less having problems.
A good descaler should disolve shells.

Many thanks both, I will try what you suggest. When the engine was last serviced it was removed from the boat and taken to the workshop because the blockage could not be cleared on site. New cooling bits were fitted at that time and the flow was excellent. Since then it has done the Staffs & Worcs, a part of the Trent & Mersey, all of the Coventry then Oxford and GU plus Northampton Arm. Nene, Middle Level and now resident on the Great Ouse. I was hoping a nice clean river that had recently been in flood (Nene April 2018) would give the cooling system a good clean out.

I have tried clearing the nozzle with a bit of wire so will have to get off my butt and remove the rubber tube. Once done I will know what to do in the future.

The engine is quite elderly (1989) but runs beautifully, usues no oil and apart from this cooling problem has never let me down.

I'm no expert on hondas, never owned a honda outboard but what Fred says sounds spot on.
Could be getting scaled up a bit inside as I would imagine the service only covered changing the impeller in the bottom of the leg.

As the resident Honda OB expert - df seems to be sleeping on the job yet again, I'll have a go.

Yes, its most likely just a blockage of the tell-tale tube or outlet probably from crud disturbed during other recent work on the cooling system or even old bits of impeller.

Poke a bit of wire into the tell-tale outlet to see if that clears it. If not, the blockage is likely to be in the rubber tube leading to it and will need to be removed at both ends to clear it - again with a bit of wire. Then just make sure the nozzles at both ends are completely clear before re-fitting it.
