Has anyone tried to fit windscreen wipers to a norman 23 ?

I came up with a novel way to solve the problem that was cost effective.
I stuck my head out the side and had a look and then wiped my glasses with my hanky.
This worked very well because the area of my glasses was less than the area of the windscreen no matter what boat i had.
And all the forgoing is meant in humour just in case someone wants to be offended! Only mention that because these days there always seems to be one somewhere.
And your solution for a Saab wiper does work well on the narrow Norman screen. Good that it is a glass screen too and not the ubiquitous plastic. So well done that man! I can see that on narrow waterways clear vision is much more important if you are not going to crash into something rather than simply trundling out to sea as there are few locks or bridge-holes at sea.
Well, I never saw any, maybe Dave F has seen a few lurking off Great Yarmouth?
I think the heat is getting to me, bloody temperatures are up to 40C now!

Fitted Wiper , very pleased
Had to modify a saab headlight wiper
extended the arm and changed blade from 5 " to 6"
works well.

The problem with a narrow screen like that is that you will only get a tiny wiped are and have to put up with the wiper arm in your view the rest of the time.
I wonder if you could rig a sliding track across the top or bottom with a toothed belt to rut straight across, it'd be messy and a lot of work mind you.

That looks like a plastic screen to me Peter, I wouldn't put a wiper near it or you'll have just as bad visability on good days too before long with all the scratches.
Rain-x or similar may be the way to go, or sunnier days.

Our 23 had a glass screen and the wipers were still not that great, even with new blades. I ended up buying some of that stuff that you apply to the glass that is designed to stop the drops from clinging. It wasn't perfect and you had to re-apply it every few months but it was way better than my smear-o-wipers (tm).

Wipers need a lot of working out first to make sure the motor position suits without being in the way and the sweep area matches the screen area, I think the posher wiper motors go down to 60 degree but the cheaper ones most get only have options of 90 or 110 degrees.
Arm length and blade length can be messed about with to suit but sweep really is the key.
If you have the space and don't mind spending a bit more pantograph arms is the way to go as you get a better swept area to see through.
Wipers and plastic screens don't go together as you'll end up with a screen you can't see through even in good weather due to the scratches.

Hello Peter and welcome. If your 23 is the older type with the GRP screen then its virtually impossible due to the small area. Some 23's, Mk2 & 3 have ally screens and it may be possible. Others wiser than me may be along to offer opinions as to how! |
